  • Apple Reportedly Hires Employees from the Now Closed London-based mapping app Pin Drop

Apple appears to have recently hired five employees of defunct mapping app, Pin Drop, who could be part of the first team to take residence at a rumored R&D office in Cambridge, UK. TechCrunch reports that Apple has recruited the team as straight hires as opposed to the “acqui-hiring process” of purchasing a firm for its talent. Three of the five employees are software engineers who helped develop Caffeinehit while the head of Pin Drop, Andy Ashburn, is now working for Apple as a senior product designer out of London.

For those of you who didn’t know, Ashburn announced the app would be closing its doors on October 31 due to lack of funding. The PinDrop.com landing page confirms the shutdown noting users can continue to use their data locally but off-site services, data and social media accounts have been expunged. The Pin Drop app previously allowed users to save (pin) locations that were visited frequently, lumping them together under categories and sharing them online. The lists were then made available to both registered and anonymous users as a community-driven location discovery tool. The hires who have moved from Pin Drop to Apple have long-since updated their LinkedIn profiles to reflect their new employment status.

It was just recently reported that Apple is close to moving into a relatively small office in Cambridge which is already home to a number of high-tech companies. Apple’s 90 Hills Road location is estimated to house roughly 40 employees though reports are suggesting Apple is set to start out with 20 people. Although the Cupertino California company hasn’t made its official appearance in Cambridge just yet, the company is rumored to be a few weeks from starting its operations at the location.
