  • Need Free Tethering on Your iOS 8 Device? Two Major Tethering Giants Are Now iOS 8-ready

Many of you have probably jumped aboard to iOS 8 already, which is Apple's latest mobile operating system capable of being jailbroken with Pangu. We have a guide at this link, and you should highly consider upgrading to iOS 8.1 and jailbreaking soon, really soon, because the upcoming iOS 8.1.1 closes the Pangu jailbreak, and to make matters even better for those eager to jailbreak, Saurik has deemed the iOS 8 jailbreak officially stable enough.

Despite being such an advanced operating system, iOS 8 carries one major flaw the carriers still have the ability to dictate whether or not you can actually use the operating system's Personal Hotspot feature. It's really not a flaw of iOS 8 itself, but it can be frustrating for those that need to use the feature. iOS 8's Continuity feature also focuses a lot on Personal Hotspot, because iOS 8 can work with other iOS 8 devices and Mac OS X Yosemite machines to offer an instant hotspot when it needs a Wi-Fi connection.

This is why when jailbreaking, installing tethering-enabling jailbreak tweaks is one of the most popular things to do. Fortunately, two of the Cydia Store's most popular tethering jailbreak tweaks have just been updated recently with official support for iOS 8. Both MyWi 8 by Intelliborn and TetherMe for iOS8+ by Sam Bingner are now available in Cydia; TetherMe for iOS8+ is a $2.99 upgrade for those that own earlier versions of TetherMe for iOS8+, while MyWi 8 is a free upgrade for those that own MyWi 6 and MyWi 7.

The major difference between the two tethering jailbreak tweaks is that TetherMe enables the out-of-the-box tethering features of iOS 8 from the Personal Hotspot preferences pane in the Settings application, while MyWi is actually its own application that is installed on the Home Screen and offers some aftermarket features that Apple's Personal Hotspot Feature doesn't offer. For example, MyWi can show you the upload and download data speeds in real time as your data is being tethered to another device or machine, show battery impact, and much more.

MyWi 8 is a $19.99 purchase in the Cydia Store for those who haven't yet purchased it, and it's hosted on the ModMyi repository, while TetherMe is a $4.99 purchase in the Cydia Store for those who haven't yet purchased it, and it's hosted on the ModMyi repository. Fortunately, MyWi also comes with a free trial that you can use to see if you'll like it, while TetherMe does not.

If you need data tethering on your jailbroken iOS 8 device(s), these are probably two of the best choices you can go with. Check them out!

I've been using MyWi since Inteliborn had their own store. Love it. Although, I am tempted to try TetherMe. Can anyone tell me any advantages to it over MyWi?

Free tethering? Do you mean if you have the correct plan to support it. If not they will charge you or automatically change your plan.

Aren't people still getting fined or upgraded to tethering plans when using these programs? Haven't these users all been rooted out at this point?

I can't use that as i still have my unlimited data plan from when i got the original iphone

I bought mywi ages ago and since then have used my intensely both for primary connection method when my Cable (the physical cable) got cut when mowing the lawn and nobody noticed for a week (the southwest has outages often) and when out with my teenage sister when visiting who has a limited data plan which is insane if you think about how much internet use a teenage girl will go thru in a single day let alone a whole month. i also jailbroke my parents phones and used the same mywi license so my parents who also have unlimited data could share that with my sister who can go thru GB in hours not months

Random note: on the first day we lost internet when we cut the cable on accident I went thru 50gb

they can not legally change your plan without your consent as most plans contract based

When i deal with AT&T i record the interaction and clearly say I am not consenting to a change in plan or contract simply using the upgrade to obtain a new phone and extend my contract

They have tried to trick my father (family plan as we can't change plans or we would lose unlimited data) into changing but I clearly told never to go to att or anything without me or to let me do it

if they con you into letting them change it, its done and they won't change it back, from my understanding in store people dont even have ability to return unlimited data plans

I've used a tethering tweak for years and I've never had problems. Only the people that make it blatantly obvious, using multiple gigabytes a month, are usually the ones that get ratted out by their carrier.

I think I'm missing something...do these apps add anything if u don't have unlimited and are using a device that has instant hotspot already enabled for use?

MyWi is a rip off. If I would have stayed with it I probably would have paid 40 bucks towards the app. Tether Me works just perfect even though they are not charging an "upgrade" free. Upgrading iOS's can be expensive anymore

No not retail locations the phone becomes a hotspot anywhere and anytime. I know this because i have att and my friend has verizon and we tried this out when they finally let is have this feature, works great too

You do need to have certain plans to have that feature, or else it's extra.

Anyone using this with T-Mobile unlimited without a tethering plan from T-Mobile? This being free?

I prefer pdanet. They advertise that they hide your tethering! I don't want to lose my unlimited data. I don't use tethering often but it's nice to have if I absolutely need it. I never use it unless I have to though.

I have att unlimited data and had it for a long time. I used mywi for years, I think starting 2010 or '11, and I occasionally got the message that att will change my plan to limited data if I don't stop tethering. Eventually in jan 2014 they changed my plan to limited data and I ended up having to pay about 40$ more per month for the data I was using. I think I averaged about 5-7 gigs a month since forever. After a 100 phone call complaints and several written letter complaints att called me in July to tell me that they received my complaint and they will be changing my plan back to unlimited. I got my unlimited back but it wasn't easy. They also credited me back for all the data surcharges for the time I had limited data. Point of this post. I will not be using mywi anymore because I will lose my unlimited data plan and I really don't want that to happen.

With iOS 8 and continuity option, do I need these apps to share my data connection from my iPhone to iPad both running IOS 8.1?

No you can turn it on through your phone settings but you may be charged by your carrier.

I have tethered on Verizon using MyWi since 2010 without issue. I don't pay much attention to the usage (grandfathered into unlimited), and average between 10-12GB a month. I've never received a notice or anything about the usage, I don't think Verizon does that like AT&T.
