  • Apple Bringing 3D Display to the iPhone?

Is Apple tinkering with a 3D display (no glassed required) for a future-generation iPhone?

A Taiwan news outlet is reporting that Apple is "working on a 'naked eye (no glasses) 3D screen.'" TPK, an Apple supplier, is purportedly actively raising capital to procure needed materials for the implementation of this particular technology.

Of course, the writing has been on the wall for some time now that Apple has been working toward such a reality. As our perpetually patent-savvy friends at PatentlyApple report today, Apple's acquisition of PrimeSense "may suggest that the project could relate to a 3D interface for photographs and videos."

Although 3D tech has been reportedly hit or miss with countless mobile devices in development (to say nothing of televisions), Apple it seems wants to get it right. But with the process already started, Apple may be ready to roll out 3D capabilities as soon as the next-generations iPhone is due for release.

      Sums it up right there.

Of course, if they do this I hope they bring the trademark "you did it first, we did it right."

True ;-) Although the disastrous Fire phone wasn't 3D, it just used a perspective trick. A true 3D display would be awesome.

Ok, Apple gets hardware ideas from Samsung, now they are using inspiration from Nintendo hardware. Really Apple, if you ask me.

Other companies have had it far longer than Nintendo.

According to wikipedia the tech involved has been around since 1901.
and by Frederic E. Ives, who made and exhibited the first known functional autostereoscopic image in 1901.
In terms of handheld use they've been in phones since 2002, but the first to get even a semblance of success was the HTC Evo 3D released in 2011, the same year as the Nintendo DS.

Edit: tl;dr: It's been around a while but nobody cared until 2011.

As long as they add some kind of slider control like on the 3DS then I will use this feature rather often. It's difficult to get the perspective perfect for everyone because everyone's eyes are different. With a depth slider/control then it will almost guarantee the feature/product will not flop.

3D is a gimmick. Who here owns a 3D TV and actually watches TV and movies in 3D?

3D is more natural for Google Glass, combined with VR. Strangely Google isn't updating it much!
