  • Apple Watch Checks in at Starwood Hotels & Resorts

Apple Watch may not even be available yet, but it's already checking in at Starwood Hotels & Resorts.

On Monday, the team behind Starwood Preferred Guest (SPG), a loyalty program from Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. (NYSE:HOT), introduced "SPG Keyless," which is hailed as the hospitality industry's first mobile, keyless entry system (guests can use their smartphone as a key).

Initially rolling out to Aloft, Element and W Hotels around the world, SPG Keyless is now available in 10 hotels in markets including Beijing, Hong Kong, New York, Los Angeles and Doha. Fittingly, given Apple's role in this technology's deployment, Aloft Cupertino is one of the first hotels to get this futuristic feature.

The technology at hand, however, isn't limited to smartphones. We're told Apple's forthcoming smartwatch will also be compatible with the keyless entry platform. This, of course, comes as no big surprise. Earlier this year, Starwood rolled out an iPhone-based program for keyless entry that clearly paved the way for augmentation of this platform.

"Not only does SPG Keyless alleviate a perennial pain point for travelers, but it also transforms the first interaction with our guests from one that is transactional to something more personal," says Frits van Paasschen, Starwood's President & Chief Executive Officer. "This is just the beginning, because through mobile we have the opportunity to marry high tech and high touch to transform the hotel experience in many exciting ways."
