  • More Than Half of Apple's Mobile Devices Now Running iOS 8

It's a critically important threshold and one that Apple managed to transcend in six weeks.

On Tuesday, Apple announced new iOS adoption numbers. And the latest major upgrade for iOS -- iOS 8 -- is now running on more than half of all active Apple mobile devices.

Despite boasting a slower adoption rate than previous major launches of iOS, Apple is working its way over the hump and finally starting to enjoy the degree of adoption it expects.

"There are many possible reasons for Apple users not upgrading to the latest iOS release as quickly as in the past," says Emil Protalinski of VentureBeat. "They may be wary of bugs or simply not impressed with the feature set. Another potentially massive factor is likely the size of the update [5GB for OTA update].

Nonetheless, Apple still doesn't need to worry about the vast market fragmentation that continues to haunt the Android ecosystem. Although iOS 8 has been slower moving than iOS 7, six weeks isn't very long to break 50% given just how many Apple mobile devices there are in operation over the world today.

Congrats to Apple and All that. But they have to fix the performance and battery life issues for older devices.

Well I ain't wussing out. Got my jailbreak on 8 and ready to go. Battery life has been lousy on every firmware version ever and on every iphone ever in my not so humble opinion. Might as well grab some new features.

Yeah I got it too but still, it would be nice for Apple to improve it.

Why? You should be happy they even support older devices. No other OS supports as much older chit as Apple does. Hardware gets out dated. Not much software can do..They should stay focused on current and future devices. Which they are.

It's not just older devices that have been affected even iPhone 5s users like myself have experienced issues with battery life when we updated to ios 8.

I had an iPod touch running 7, and I just updated to a 5s running 8.1. My battery life had improved exponentially.

I'm staying with 7.1.2 until I have to update...

My 5s and 5 are still on 7.1.2 and my 6 is on 8.1. I've noticed that my 6 last longer than both phones. I love 8.1 better for the added features and my 6 is jailbroken as well so I'm not missing out anything but a few tweaks that haven't been updated to 8.1 yet.

Do you REALLY know what EXPONENTIALLY means? Exponentially in what exactly? You know, e^{0.1} is not that big

Actually, I'm getting a truly exponential difference. I used to last up to 3 hours on a good day. Yesterday I rocked 9.

Most of my friends with 16GB devices are still on iOS 7 because they don't have space

Tell them to update using a computer.

They have the iOS8 jailbreak to thank for that. No doubt, the reason iOS8 doesn't fix all the orientation (command center issues are related) and copy/paste issues is so that jail broken users will be annoyed enough to give up their jailbreak for the next update.

Maybe this is conspiracy, but I think they allowed cydia to drop to sway us power ios users to update since their numbers weren't all that great compared to last year.
