  • Microsoft Set to Enter Wearables Market Before Apple?

Apple may have already taken the wraps off of its forthcoming inaugural smartwatch, but we're still months away from actually seeing the device in stores. Consequently, an untold number of competing smartwatches are poised to gain a leg-up on Apple this holiday season as many shoppers will likely forego waiting for Apple and pull the trigger on a competing -- and available - smartwatch.

If reports coming to light over the weekend are accurate, Microsoft may very well be among those to steal Apple's thunder in the weeks ahead.

"Microsoft is gearing up to launch a wearable device within the next few weeks, Forbes has learned," the publication is reporting. "The gadget is a smart watch that will passively track a wearer’s heart rate and work across different mobile platforms. It will also boast a battery life of more than two days of regular use, sources close to the project say."

Although there have been rumblings for months about Microsoft entering the wearables arena, news of such a swift product launch is both a major development for the wearables arena and a potentially huge blow to Apple should the Microsoft smartwatch gain any traction during the anticipated holiday wearables sales boom.

I'm excited about where the wearables market is headed. I can't wait to get my hands on some to see how they really work out.
