  • GT Advanced Technologies Set to Eliminate 727 Jobs in Mesa, Arizona

GT Advanced Technologies recently announced it will be eliminating more than 700 jobs at its plant in Mesa, Arizona. The layoffs in question are scheduled for completion by December 15th this year. The company revealed its plans to eliminate exactly 727 jobs in a filing with the Mesa City Council. The information was reported by AZ Central after the company was required to furnish the information under the federal Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act.

Linda Luman, GTAT’s VP of Human Resources signed off on the filing that will be getting rid of 524 production line workers, 108 technical jobs, 70 managers and 25 administrative positions. Employees who were set to be let go were recently notified and layoffs are expected to start next Tuesday.

The recent news is the latest development in GTAT’s downfall. The trouble all started earlier this month when the company ended up filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. Following the bankruptcy filing, GTAT announced it would wind down sapphire production operations but offered no additional details. Court documents later revealed that Apple’s strict non-disclosure agreements as a reason for being tight lipped about operations.

As of right now the court that is handling the case is currently deciding whether to make the details of Apple’s arrangement with GTAT public, which is something that Apple wants to keep secret. We’ll have to wait and see what happens next.
