  • iPhone 6 Launch Fueled Accessory Sales to Record Numbers in Just the First Two Weeks

Apple's 4.7-inch iPhone 6 and 5.5-inch iPhone 6 Plus weren't the only things that broke sales records in the first few days and/or weeks of sales.

New data from the NPD Group seems to support the theory that accessory sales also broke new records with the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus launch. According to the data, accessory sales reached about $249 million in the first two weeks of the launch of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

In case you're wondering just how substantial that is, accessory sales after the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c release only reached about $195 million. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus outreached that number by about 22%.

The accessory sales include that of cases, Bluetooth accessories, headphones, and more. Citing AppleInsider's report, cases were among the most frequently-bought accessories following the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus launch.

Cases being the most popular accessory makes complete sense because that's about the time that the 'bendgate' scandal started and suddenly everyone was rushing to get themselves a protective case to keep their precious smartphone from getting bent in their pockets.

What kinds of accessories have you bought for your iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus so far?

I got the supcase unicorn beetle. Not quite as big as a otterbox but still feels pretty sturdy

I had 2 spigen cases before even receiving the phone/ SlimFit and NeoHybrid. The back of the new 6 is just so damn ugly I had to cover those lines. More for grip and customization thatn for protection. Although the Neo Hybrid, would -technically- protect the phone (somewhat).

Have two 6 plus Rokform cases on pre order... Bought 2 Leather Apple cases so I had something to put them in till the Rockform cases come in early December... I ordered a Griffin Survivor case and an I-blason case from Amazon to hold us over till December because these leather Apple cases arent protective enough, they sure are smooth and sleek though...

So I've spent some money on cases.

I got the Apple leather case. I really like it a lot. I thought it would be too bulky, but the iPhone 6 is so thin it's not bulky at all.

I personally never used cases on any of my iPhones until the 6+. The protruding camera lens and ugly lines on the back of the 6+ needed to be hidden, so I bought the apple leather case. I wish the leather case came in white.

I'm not very happy with it. It feels so cheaply made compared to the one that I bought for the iPhone 5 a year ago.

I went with Speck CandyShell. After watching crash tests of the 6 using no case and Apple leather and silicone cases I figured I'd go with something that has a bit more protection. And since there's no Sapphire glass on the 6 I wanted more of a lip to protect the glass.

Frankly, the accessory sales bump isn't surprising to me. Consider that the 5 & 5s can use most of the same accessories and the 5c is half plastic which probably didn't inspire people to buy a case... I'm sure the bend non-issue (which I refuse to add a 'gate' to) prompted people to buy a case for their 6 or 6+ as well. So, bigger jump in initial accessory sales makes sense to me. I think it will be more interesting to see what happens over time as more accessories that connect to new iOS features come out.

I've purchased one case from eBay and 2 cases from another website for my 6. I'm waiting to purchase an expensive case when I find something I really like. I hate thin cases and always look for the bulky cases that stand out from everyone else.
