  • 26 Million Full Downloads and 81 Million Customers 'Experienced' Free U2 Album

Last month after Apple announced their next generation iPhone 6 lineup and the Apple Watch, they surprised everyone by telling them that those with an iTunes account would be able to download U2’s upcoming album for free. It has since been reported that the partnership between U2 and Apple proved to be highly successful. ‘Songs of Innocence’ reached some 81 million customers across iTunes, Beats Music, and iTunes Radio. According to Apple’s iTunes chief, Eddy Cue stated:

To help put this into perspective," [Cue] says, "prior to this, 14 million customers had purchased music from U2 since the opening of the iTunes Store in 2003.
Billboard was told by Cue that ‘Songs of Innocence’ was downloaded 26 million plus times and 81 million plus people ‘experienced the songs.’ The partnership between Apple and rock band U2 were estimated to be at $100 million and for long-term. There were many complaints when the Cupertino-based company first released the free album because they had set iTunes to have automatic downloads. Because of this, many users had this album downloaded without even knowing about it.

‘Experienced the songs???’ What a ******.
Everybody in my office has experienced the coffee from the vending machine. Doesn’t mean they like it. Some people had the free instant one some bought the bean to cup.

This is why people don’t take CEOs and the like seriously.

I bet a lot of people downloaded it simply because it was free. Which is what I did. I scanned through a couple tracks. Meh.

HAHA! People love free stuff. Just because it was downloaded, doesn't mean it was listened to or even enjoyed. Stats can be so swayed.

They were paid mostly for marketing that hasn't yet occurred, so it's too early to say. The album isn't bad but not their best.

I didn't even know I had this album until I went to update and realized I didn't have enough storage. Let me see what I can delete to free up some space. Oh, here's some songs that IDGAF about. I'll just swipe left like how I delete any other song... NOPE

does this mean I "experienced the songs"?

They are just trying to turn something negative into positive by throwing out bogus stats.

Where's the stat that shows how many of those 81 million people were pissed off that they were forced to "experienced the songs" because of a simple option in a menu

Why do I think U2 should have paid Apple for this? Maybe my thinking is slightly off.

Smart move U2. You realize your musical career is circling the drain so partner with Apple since they already partner with your charity and give your album to EVERYONE in a last ditch effort for anyone on the planet to remember anything that came from U2. Stick to charities and let your musical career die quick and painlessly like you should have over a decade ago.
