  • Munster Cools Red Hot Projections for Apple Watch Sales

As quickly as it sizzled upon its unveiling last month, first year sales projections for Apple Watch have begun to fizzle (at least a tad) with each passing week, as estimates for when Apple's inaugural wearable grow later into 2015.

As it stands, the most optimistic of release date projections puts Apple Watch into consumer hands no sooner than late Q1 of 2015. Consequently, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster now believes Apple won't sell as many Apple Watches in its first calendar year of availability as initially expected.

Munster now believes Apple will sell 10 million (not 12 as previously estimated) by the end of 2015. Of course, those are still big numbers for Apple in a new product category within a nascent market.

"We note that various media reports have suggested builds of up to 30 million watches in the first year, thus investor expectations likely vary in terms of total units," Munster tells investors. "We believe that to date, there have been less than 3 million smartwatches sold in total, thus the Apple Watch will represent a significant change in the smartwatch industry."
