  • Fitness Tracking Hardware and Software Firm Misfit Announces $49 Tracker, Misfit Flash

Misfit, the fitness tracking hardware and software firm recently announced Flash, a rework of the previous Shine activity monitor which is designed to have a smaller entry price for prospective customers. The new fitness monitor offers the same capabilities as the previous iteration but comes in at half the price. That being said, the company has made some changes to the activity monitor as well.

The most obvious design change was the switch from an aluminum chassis to one that is made from polycarbonate and wrapped in “soft touch” thermoplastic polyurethane. The shape of the monitor remains the same but the device is a bit thicker, likely due to the new push button physical user interface. Last but not least, the new iteration of the device brings in new bright neon color options which were previously unavailable.

Unlike the previous iteration which uses an accelerometer to detect and translate taps into controls, the Flash has a large input button which takes the form of its entire front face. Accumulated motion and time is displayed by 12 red LEDs that shine through the polyurethane covering. The components on the inside are largely the same with motion tracking sensors, a button cell battery and waterproof seals that function well up to 30 meters below the surface. Much like the Shine, Flash also tracks sleep quality and connects to the Misfit iOS app via Bluetooth 4.0.

The recent announcement was made just one week after Misfit debuted a developer toolkit in hopes of bringing connected fitness trackers and wellness apps with a single unified platform. Those of you who are interested in buying the Flash will be able to do so from Best Buy, Target, Amazon, Walmart and other partner retailers for $50 when the product is launched in October. If you want to preorder the device, you can do so from Misfit’s website (just hit the source link below).

The LED lights flash according to the time. The hour flashes first and then the minute. It's pretty sweet.

      Oh, ok, that makes sense.
