  • A Flood of Samsung Smartphone Trade-In Requests Surface After iPhone 6 Unveiling

Unsurprisingly, the announcement of the iPhone 6 handsets started a flood of trade-in requests from previous-generation iPhone owners who were lured by the new devices’ larger displays and extra features. Old iPhone owners aren’t the only ones that are making the jump though – many Samsung users are also eager to upgrade their experience. According to buyback service, Gazelle, trade-ins of Samsung devices were up threefold on a weekly basis immediately after the media event this past week, suggesting that the larger screen sizes may already be persuading Android users to make the swap.

As many of you may already know, Samsung has offered larger-sized smartphones including the Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series for quite some time but this year was the first year that Apple will be catering to the trend. That being said, previous-gen iPhone users are also quickly trading in their devices. Statistics from Gazelle point toward the iPhone 5 being the most popular item traded in, representing 47% of all legacy Apple smartphones. Apple’s iPhone 5S came in next accounting for 34% of all trade-ins while the iPhone 4S was 13%.

Overall, Gazelle saw trade-ins increase 293% from the week prior due to the iPhone 6 announcements. The service is averaging roughly 480 offers per minute.

Were you one of the many who used Gazelle or another service to get rid of your old device to make way for the new one? If so, what service did you use?

I'd like to see how the Samsung number compares to past years of iPhone announcements. That would be more telling than this information.

I'm kind of surprised by the high number of 5S trade ins. But, these are offers and not actual deals. Maybe people just want to see how much they can get, and walk away when they realize they would have an incremental $300-400 to pay for an upgrade.
