  • Juniper: Apple Watch Coming at a Good Time

If timing is everything, Apple is impeccably punctual and prescient with the early 2015 release of its first ever smartwatch.

According to a new report and corresponding projections from Juniper Research, the growth of the smartwatch market is on pace to explode in the years ahead, with major opportunities for financial gain coming to those already in or about to enter this product category with a quality product.

Based on the analysts' latest research, global retail revenue from smart wearable devices will "treble by 2016, before reaching $53.2 billion by 2019." The market, Juniper proposes in its report summary, will be driven by an increase in sales of premium smart watches and smart glasses through the end of the decade.

"Smart watches will replace fitness wearables as the most purchased wearables category by 2017," Juniper estimates. "With smartphones increasingly becoming commoditised, wearables will remain companion devices, with many tied to specific operating systems to differentiate offerings."

Juniper's new white paper -- "Wearables: Smart Chic or Smart Hype?" -- is available now for download.
