  • Apple to Partner with American Express for iPhone Payments System

According to reports by Re/code, Apple may be partnering with American Express for an iPhone payment system for the upcoming iPhone 6. The device(s) is supposed to be announced on September 9th, with a possible release date not too far after. It was rumored before that the Cupertino-based company was in the talks with Visa for a payment system. Re/code noted:

Apple has reached an agreement with American Express to work together on its new iPhone payments system, according to sources familiar with the talks. American Express is one of several partners Apple will need to sign up before it can launch its new payments plan, which sources say it plans to announce at its September 9 product event.
Just a few days ago, reports said that a near field communications (NFC) chip would be incorporated in the iPhone 6. If that ends up being true, itíll be a big part in incorporating the mobile payments functionality. Currently, credit cards are required in order for iTunes to be activated, and with the Touch ID security technology built into the iPhone, it makes perfect sense for the company to leverage these features for the use of mobile payments as well. It's also naturally the next step in partnering with credit card companies to incorporate mobile payments and a matter of time before everything falls into place.

I'm sure they'll secure a deal with all the big credit cards. I'd like to see Paypal and Amazon added to the list, as well.

I agree re Visa/Mastercard. I got rid of my personal AMEX as I found too many merchants turn their nose up at AMEX complaining about the merchant fees, plus hated their useless travel agency and other supposed cardholder perks. A big electronics store here, JB HIFI also straight up asks if you are using AMEX to purchase with at the checkout and then hits you with a surcharge for it.

AMEX isn't what it used to be these days. Some places stopped taking it. And the perks that used to be exclusive, you can get in either VISA / Mastercard.

I'm quite sure that the big two would be used. No doubt about it. Plus Amazon and Paypal as well.

I love my Delta AmEx. Almost every place I go takes it. I have the Platinum, which costs $150 a year, but with it I get a free companion place ticket a year, which could cost upwards of $400-600 depending on where I fly, so it pays for itself a couple times over just with that.

One of my favorite benefits is automatic extended warranty on anything I buy up to a year. I had a pair of BT headphones that cost $130 crap out on me after 1 1/2 years. I filed a claim with AmEx. All I had to do is fill out a form and email a copy of the receipt, and they credited my account with no other questions asked or having to send in the broken merchandise. Also saves me from having to buy extended warranties like Apple Care+ that can cost at least $100.

Say what you want about AmEx, but I get more out of their card than I could any other just with the free flight alone. They're other benefits like warranty extension and travel coverage are also top notch and you're glad you have it when you need it.
