  • NXP Bringing NFC to iPhone 6

With all signs pointing to Apple entering the mobile payments arena with the looming launch of iPhone 6, Apple has reportedly turned to Dutch chipmaker NXP for iPhone 6's NFC capabilities.

First reported by the Financial Times, Apple is said to have seriously shopped around for the right partner before coming to the conclusion that NXP would be the best fit for giving iPhone 6 a cutting-edge contactless mobile payment system.

Apple, we're told, has been exploring NFC functionality for its iPhone since Steve Jobs was still at the helm, but only recently have executives reached the understanding that the opportunity to enter this market the right way is finally here.

"Apple has been actively involved in making payments more convenient and streamlined for consumers who use its device," James Wester, IDC practice director for Worldwide Payment Strategies, said this week. "Apple's unique role as a device manufacturer, OS provider, and online retailer means Apple has the ability to impact the way payments evolve like few other companies. Merchants, issuers, processors, and other payment stakeholders will need to understand that impact and begin adjusting their investments and strategies accordingly."

Meh, I'm not interesting in a mobile phone payment option unless it can be used pretty much anywhere, which is going to take a lot of infrastucture investment and a multi-plaform payment system.

since the infrastructure is almost nonexistent and Apple isn't one for multi-platform software solutions, I'm not going to get excited about this.

      Maybe in another 5-10 years.

So why add a battery wasting NFC chip to do something a barcode on the display can already do? So a year from now are we really going to have an iPhone 6s or S6?

According to some reports I've read, it's going to be the "jolt" the NFC industry needed. Or should I say the "payment credit card processing" industry needed? I could see this being used literally everywhere. Matter of fact, for those who don't support this payment method will hear it from the Apple fans

If this is true, get ready for a revolution in the way we pay for things. The Digital Wallet Age was waiting for Apple.
