  • Barnes & Noble and Samsung Team Up with Nook Galaxy Tab 4 to Compete against Apple

Although Barnes & Noble no longer makes its own tablets, the company is still in the hardware business with a brand-new $179 Nook, which is set to compete the iPad. The model is ironically built by Apple’s tech rival, Samsung. The Galaxy Tab 4 Nook was recently announced by Barnes & Noble, pitched as a full Android tablet that can also be used as an e-reader. Unsurprisingly, the device targets Apple’s iPad mini in the low end of the tablet market with a 7-inch display and a $179 starting price (with an instant $20 rebate).

The Nook is currently available in more than 660 Barnes & Noble stores as well as through the company’s website. It’s slightly lighter than Apple’s iPad mini weighing in at 0.6 pounds compared to 0.69 pounds but it does have a smaller diagonal display size. The Nook is also 0.35 inches thick, measuring slightly thicker than the iPad mini with Retina display, which comes in at 0.29 inches. It also touts a 1.3 megapixel front camera, 3-megapixel rear camera, Wi-Fi connectivity, GPS support and comes with 8 GB of storage. The 7-inch display has a screen resolution of 1,280 by 800 pixels and is powered by a 1.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor. It also runs a custom version of Android 4.4 KitKat, one which features the Barnes & Noble Nook store instead of Google Play or Samsung Hub.

As of right now, Barnes & Noble appears to be offering what appears to be more than $200 worth of free content with new purchases. The content includes “Freakonomics,” single episodes of shows like “Veep” (from HBO) and 14-day free trial subscriptions of several popular magazines. The company also offers a “Free Fridays” program, which will offer free Nook books, videos and apps every week.

We’ll have to see how the Nook does compared to Apple’s iPad mini but if the past is any representation of what’s to come, the company has a long way to go before it becomes a real competitor.

      What the hell?

What's the point of having an e-reader that's not in e-ink? If money isn't an issue, go with the iPad mini—I was really hoping for a new e-ink e-reader.
