  • Apple, Big Blue Working Together on Big Data

Apple has a new but familiar partner in the world of big-time technology.

The venerable Mac maker has hooked up with IBM to bring "Big Blue’s core competencies" in big data and analytics to the Cupertino tech behemoth's iDevice line.

Greg Slabodkin of Health Data Management suggests the impact for healthcare information technology could be significant.

"The exclusive agreement will result in a new class of more than 100 industry-specific enterprise solutions, including native apps developed from the ground up for healthcare, insurance, banking and other markets," Slabodkin explains.

Although the move clearly benefits both partners, Apple in particular has much to gain from the rapid assimilation into the enterprise that this deal allows. As of this writing, Apple and IBM aren't muttering a word about the financial arrangements in place behind the partnership. But it's all but certainly a humdinger of a deal.

"iPhone and iPad are the best mobile devices in the world and have transformed the way people work with over 98 percent of the Fortune 500 and over 92 percent of the Global 500 using iOS devices in their business today,” said Tim Cook in a news release. “For the first time ever we’re putting IBM’s renowned big data analytics at iOS users’ fingertips, which opens up a large market opportunity for Apple. This is a radical step for enterprise and something that only Apple and IBM can deliver.”
