  • Apple Drops the 'Hachette' on eBooks

Ever the opportunist, Apple is capitalizing on publishing house Hachette's ongoing legal skirmish with Amazon by introducing a handful of hot titles to iTunes iBookstore for the basement bargain price of only $9.99.

Forthcoming releases by James Patterson and J.K. Rowling are now being heavily advertised as Apple has - at least temporarily - a huge advantage over the world's largest online retailer. And, as of this writing, it's not clear how much longer Amazon's disagreement and negotiations with Hachette will persist.

Unfortunately for Amazon, the company won’t let customers preorder digital versions of Hachette's most eagerly awaited titles. And the same goes from traditional print versions, too.

"Beyond the fact that Apple’s happy to take advantage of a (much bigger) rival’s fight, what’s particularly interesting about the promotion is that one of the chief disputes between Hachette and Amazon is over pricing of digital books — Amazon wants to push prices down; Hachette does not," Peter Kafka of Re/code reported Tuesday.
