  • iPhone Owners Expected to be Earliest Adopters of iWatch

With Apple's long awaited and still-unconfirmed smartwatch expected to arrive (finally) this October, market projections for the wearable tech's potential are all over the map. But there's one logical estimate that keeps turning up. iPhone owners and others already entrenched in the iOS ecosystem will likely be the fastest and most aggressive early adopters of the iWatch.

On Thursday, BMO Capital’s Keith Bachman reiterated an Outperform rating for Apple, telling investors that 10% to 20% of iPhone users might buy an “iWatch” soon out of the gate, assuming it's priced in the $250 range. If so, that could spike revenue 3% to 6% for 2015. And given Apple's typical annual revenue, that's nothing to shake a stick at.

All told, this is a big market for Apple to enter.

Almost half a million smartwatches have been sold in the U.S. since October 2013 and category incumbents, Samsung and Pebble, dominate the market, according to NPD's Weekly Tracking Service. Revenues from the smartwatch market totaled $96 million since October, NPD finds.

"The smartwatch market is poised to continue to grow in 2014," said Ben Arnold, executive director of industry analysis at NPD. "With nearly $100 million in US sales in less than a year, the category is off to a promising start with just two major brands."

Will Apple be the third? We will likely find out soon enough.

Don't see the point other than profit. Creating a need they are. I don't even wear a watch. Besides, I'd rather spend my $200+ on something actually worth having.

Seriously? This is 'imagine wear' + 'no duh'.
This article is reporting imagined financial projections based on a product that doesn't exist.

I also heard that Apple is going to have a Smart TV!
And I read on a blog that Apple iUnicorn with Rainbow Farts was going to be released in the fall!
I know it's Friday in the US, but can we get back to reality a little?

I won't be adopting LOL I don't wear a watch and don't need to. I have my iPhone to see what time it is and to use to do stuff on it. Why would I need a watch?

If iWatch is real (and I believe it will be), I will only buy it if it features the ability to track vitals and other health stats to sync with healthkit AND hits a price point of $199 or less.

If it's just a watch with a Bluetooth connection to an iPhone, completely agree. I'm hoping this version or the next will have health tracking.

I love how the writer says that smart watches are dominating the market with over half a million sold in the U.S....half a mill is nothing lol! If Apple does come out with one I bet it will be health focused with some extra features and it will "dominate" the market.

Smart watches aren't a bad idea, I mean you could definitely get some handy gadgets on it. It does however, defeat the purpose of a watch; vanity. Yes you know it's true
