  • PlayStation TV to Challenge Apple TV in the U.S. This Fall

Add another name to the growing list of competitors aiming to claim a piece of Apple's living room market share. From Roku to Amazon, streaming set-top boxes and related services are fast becoming big business. And now Sony wants in on the action in the United States.

According to an announcement from the tech giant, the PlayStation TV streaming micro-console will reach consumers later this year with a price tag Apple and Amazon are familiar with - $99.

Sony made the announcement last night at the Electronic Entertainment Expo, which is taking place in L.A.

Building upon a familiar playbook for similar devices, PlayStation TV certainly doesn't reinvent the wheel. But it sure shakes it up, especially if you're an avid gamer looking for a little something more from available set-top boxes on the market right now.

Once connected to a user's TV, PlayStation's offering enables gameplay (including PlayStation 4 games) and the ability to stream online vids through PlayStation Now. The platform even lets you play Vita games on a TV. For now, some 1,000 titles will be available - new hits and old favorites - on PlayStation TV.

For those inclined, a $139 bundle will be offered this fall, which includes a memory card and access to additional gaming content.

Hope they put more effort into it than the PS4. My PS3 gets all my gaming time while my PS4 is a $400 door stop.

Buying a $100 box that will stream PS1, PS2 (I assume, but haven't heard it said), PSP, PS3 games... good lord.. And it will play some Vita games and stream from the PS4 that's hooked up in another room. The only thing that will keep this from being a HUGE success for gamers is if the Playstation Now pricing is ridiculous. I'm hoping it's a Netflix type subscription as opposed to a rental system.

Sign me up for this thing.

Amazing..my ps4 gets all the gaming time, while my ps3 is only used for streaming media.

PS3 games run like pure ****.

Article mentions it not reinventing the wheel, but steaming PS4 into a diff TV in the house! That's huge!!

      I'm in.

I'll be getting one for sure. Then I can sell my second PS4 that's in my bedroom.

The only thing I use my PS3 for is 3D movies. Once they add that to the PS4 I'll be trading the PS3 in for some Gamestop store credit.
