  • Peer-to-Peer AirPlay Coming to iOS 8, Apple TV

As the developer preview of iOS 8 is thoroughly dissected in the hours following its release yesterday at WWDC 2014 in San Francisco, we're learning more about the goodies contained in Apple's latest offering.

According to new insight gleaned overnight, iOS 8 will serve up support for "peer-to-peer AirPlay discovery and playback." What does that mean?

The new peer-to-peer connection feature would allow iPhones and iPads to connect to Apple TVs even if they're not connected to the same wireless network. That's relatively simple use case, but it's got broader implications because it means that if two AirPlay devices can see each other they can directly connect.
It's certainly a positive step in the right direction by Apple, which has finally made it easier to stream content via Airplay to an Apple TV that isn't your own. This fall, when iOS 8 drops publicly, this new AirPlay peer-to-peer discovery and streaming capability will be available for all.

Stick with MMi throughout the week as more insight is gleaned from yesterdays' grand unveiling of iOS 8.

Great, this is how they should've designed this in the first place!!!
It is ridiculous to wait for the buffering taking 2 minutes to watch a 30 second video!
