  • iOS 8 Officially Drops Support for the iPhone 4

iOS 8 was announced by Apple's staff today at the WWDC 2014 Keynote at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, California.

It comes with a slew of new features that our Michael Essany covered shortly ago; it's already out for developers to download and the public will see it in the Fall of this year.

While the iPhone 4 has been long supported by Apple with previous versions of iOS, such as iOS 7, it would appear that Apple is finally dropping support for the iPhone 4 with iOS 8. Apple updated its Web site minutes ago with information on iOS 8, and the compatibility list only includes the following devices:

    • iPhone 4s
    • iPhone 5
    • iPhone 5c
    • iPhone 5s
    • iPod touch 5th generation
    • iPad 2
    • iPad with retina display
    • iPad Air
    • iPad Mini
    • iPad Mini with retina display

The iPhone 4 is a device with a single-core A4 processor and is sometimes sluggish running the latest version of iOS 7. As the operating systems become more and more advanced, they demand more power and resources from the hardware.

While we're sad to see the strong little iPhone 4 leave the list of supported devices, it's understandably time to let it go.

The 4S will be next. Its not like it runs very smooth on iOS 7 anyways. It's going to get the axe either half way through iOS 8 or when iOS 9 is released.

The 3GS lasted until 6, but the 4 only lasts until 7?

I would keep in mind that any features that iOS8 brings, those will probably be available through Cydia.
      -themes, tweaks etc.

Since the 4s is actually dual-core and has more resources than the iPhone 4, I can see it actually staying in service until iOS 10-ish.

I honestly don't see this happening though it would be great.
      iPhone: 3.1.3
      iPHone 3G: 4.1.2
      3GS: 6.1.6

I just can't imagine how anyone would still be using an iPhone4. What a slow paper weight of a phone. Terrible graphics - non-retina (pretty sure) and just sooooo slow... A 4S I could 'bear'. But a 3GS or 4 are just SO painful to use..

The Retina display was probably the biggest selling point of the iPhone 4. I'm surprised you didn't notice it when you used one.

I just don't understand why anyone would still be using an iphone 4 either only because there are about to be 4 generations of iPhones ahead of you.

If the iPhone 4 isnt going to have IOS8 then there now IS a need to jailbreak IOS7.1 as thats the last IOS for the iPhone4 so it needs to be jailbroken.
Will be see a IOS8/7.1 jailbreak or will they release it before or after? I would prefer before as I was forced to upgrade. iPad locked up and had to restore and only way was up.

There is a jailbreak already for iOS 7.1 for iPhone 4. Semi-tethered but works great. Look up geeksnow.

What about the New iPad? I would imagine if the iPad 2 is compatible with iOS8, The New iPad would be too?

Signed up for a DEV account earlier today still says pending. After waiting this long it's annoyed me enough to cancel but of course that department is closed.

This is good news. And it happened fast.. Just 2 weeks ago the 7.1 iph4-only JB only existed on a couple of dev's phones. Are you implying the semi tether for ip4 is released publicly now?

2 weeks? iPhone 4 has had a tethered jailbreak for a while now. Since before 7.1.1.

I personally jailbroke my i4 end of April on 7.1.1. I know king did his well before that on 7.1. iPhone 4 always has ability for a tethered jailbreak. Just takes the right people to work it into new firmwares.

Yes, I got on iph4 that's been JB'd for months. It was only a few weeks after it came out.

U are thinking of the untethered 7.1.1 JB which is private. Tethered JBs are out usually pretty quick for the A4 once the updated firmware is pushed.

A4 is Retina pal! Same chassis as the A5 (4S)

Ah yes. That's where my confusion was. The untether still does not exist and the tethered comes out quick. Thx, Simon, King & Jato. Set me straight again..

And yes.. I4 was beginning of retina.. But today.. anyone holding onto an iPhone 4 as their daily phone is subjecting themselves to needless torture..

Well the 7.1.1 untether does exist just not publicly. Whether you count that is non existent I guess is up to each & every individual.

Yuh the A4 is an old workhorse but its very handy as a look in to Jailbreaks before an untether is released.

Id say development will slow down in this are for your average joe Developer with the no A4 tether on iOS8.
