National September 11 Memorial and Museum will allow users to use their iPod Touch, iPhone or iPad to take one of three self guided themed audio tours when the museum opens later this May. The museum has announced that each tour has stories from the day of the attack (September 11, 2001) to the recovery operation at the WTC site. The museums own descriptive tour will also be available when it opens on May 21st.

The “Witnessing History” tour guide is narrated by Robert De-Niro and shows the perspective of first responders, members of the victims’ family, recovery workers, and journalists, just to name a few. The “Building History” tour talks about the design, architecture, and archaeological remnants of the museum and first WTC. Children ages 8-11 will also have a “discovering history” tour that was specially designed for them.

“Witnessing History” is available in multiple languages including German, American Sign Language, Mandarin Chinese, French, Portuguese, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish but other tours are only available in English. The iOS app supports VoiceOver for easy navigation by visitors who are visually impaired.

The 9/11 Museum Audio Guide is a free 3.5MB download available for download from Apple’s App Store.
