  • Apple Is Once Again Largest PC Vendor With iPad and Mac Shipments

Apple has handily retained its title as the world’s largest PC vendor in the first quarter of 2014, with more than 20 million combined iPad and Mac shipments, according to data from Canalys. Although lower iPad shipments in March led to an overall decline, the company’s 20 million plus iPad and Mac units shipped in the three months, that it was enough to give Apple first place and a 17 percent total share.

According to an announcement made by Canalys recently, Apple shared that they had shipped 4.1 million Macs and 16.3 million iPads during its quarterly earnings giving it 20.4 million total PCs. Canalys Senior Analyst Tim Couling stated,

"The fall in iPad shipments in (the first quarter) was the sharpest ever, Apple took action during the quarter to run down its iPad inventory — a smart move as tablet stock in the channel rose due to strong seasonal shipments in the previous quarter. Longer term, we do not believe Apple's Q1 performance points to a decline in the tablet category, despite growing pressure from larger-screen smart phones.”

Although the tablet market showed slow growth in the first quarter, Canalys is expecting that the tablet market will continue to grow as consumers will be adapting and replacing traditional desktops and notebooks.

"Consumers, and increasingly businesses, are continuing to adapt, with tablets acting as disruptors and finding their place as desktop and notebook replacements. Apple's ecosystem and the recent launch of Office for iPad should ensure it is well placed to remain a leader for some time."

Desktop and notebook declines were slowed due to businesses upgrading to Microsoft’s retired Windows XP platform to newer still-supported operating systems from software giant in Redmond, Wash. In third place was HP, fourth was Samsung, and fifth was Dell with just under 10 million tablets and computers shipped in the quarter. Worldwide client PC shipments reached about 123.7 million units in 2014’s first quarter- which was a 5% year over year increase. Tablet shipments increased 21% and tablet shipments reached 50.8 million units, outshipping notebook PCs. All in all, notebooks were 38% of the PC market and tablets accounted for 41%.
