  • Is This Amazon's New Smartphone?

Following years of rumors that even pre-date the launch of Amazon's line of tablets, the online shopping giant and fast-growing consumer tech maker will soon unveil it's own Amazon-branded smartphone. And it will truly set itself apart from its leading rivals in the space, Apple and Samsung.

Published today by BGR, what we see above (supposedly) is the Amazon flagship smartphone, the high-end model of a new lineup of smartphones.

What we're told is that the company has spent years "creating a unique and, at times, novel user experience that has two main focuses: Amazon products and services, and a custom 3D interface unlike anything we have seen before on a smartphone."

If this insider knowledge is legit, Amazon's first smartphone bestows six cameras (needed to facilitate the 3D capabilities) and a glasses-free 3D interface. Due to launch possibly before the end of summer (undercutting Apple's early fall iPhone 6 launch), the flagship device will run Android, be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor, and will include 2GB of RAM. The main rear camera packs a resolution of 13 megapixels. There's even a front-facing camera for video chats. Amazon has also tossed in its Mayday customer service feature.

Names and pricing remain an enigma, both for the high-end model and a low-end version (think iPhone 5c). To start, the new device will be available exclusively in the U.S., although multiple carrier arrangements are likely.

I think if the iPhone 6 16GB starts at $300 it will not sell very well.

Raising prices might be the thing that finally pushes me away from Apple. I doubt it, but we'll see...esp if this thing is the beast it's supposed to be.

3D just seems so gimmicky. It's kind of a fad and it seems to be moving towards the end of it's reign. I just don't think most people really even want 3D. I know I don't, and I don't know anyone that truly does. The 3D TVs and BluRay didn't seem to do as well as they hoped. But I guess only time will tell.

Great another android phone smh! Other companies have already tried the glass free 3D thing and failed. I think it was LG?, but not sure. It looked ok, but videos and games all had to be programmed for 3D to enjoy the feature.

Indeed. If they increase the price, I'll be going with the (likely cheaper by then) 5s.

Yes it will be interesting to see something new instead of the same old iphone with a number incremented by one at the end and nothing compelling to me to make it worth buying. And with talk of apple raising the price? Definitely won't be buying any more iphones especially with their crappy non-replaceable batteries.

Android phones aren't anything to much different either though. Same snapdragon CPU and 2 GB mem and etc... Plus I believe the new S5 battery is non removable battery now also. So have to see how everyone does on there new model phones and what they are using and how they are made.

Quit complaining about hypothetical price increases for luxury items. Every year there are predictions that Apple will raise iPhone prices and every year they are wrong. If Apple WERE to raise prices a bit for this bigger phone most of you have been moaning and ******** about for the past 4 years, good for them.

I'm curious to see how Amazon's phone positions them in other markets - we know it'll be content-driven, which makes it pretty useless outside of the U.S.

If the price goes up on an iPhone we will still run after it, it is after all an Apple iPhone, There is a reason why the price would go up...
