  • Amazon Rumored to Release New Set-Top Box and Microsoft Set to Unveil Xbox Successor

The set-top box industry which is occupied by Apple TV and others may get a lot more crowded in the coming weeks as Microsoft has recently announced a data for the unveiling of its next-generation Xbox console. The news comes in around the same time that rumors of Amazon pondering a step into the TV arena are also afloat.

Microsoft has been inviting media outlets to a May 21 event on the Xbox campus with the invitations touting “a new generation revealed” and says the event will include a special unveiling. Much like what Sony did with its PlayStation 4, Microsoft is taking the wraps off its next-generation console in a special event rather than waiting until this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in Los Angeles. Microsoft spokesman Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb notes that Microsoft will “continue the conversation and showcase our full lineup of blockbuster games” at E3.

Rumors have been in full swing regarding the capabilities of the success to the Xbox 360. There have been some leaks pointing towards eye-tracking technology as well as deep integration with a user’s television set. Microsoft is said to be positioning the device as a living room hub, tying together a user’s television, gaming, Internet and mobile experiences. Meanwhile, Internet retail giant Amazon is also said to be plotting a foray into the set-top box segment. Amazon’s alleged internet-connected device would connect to televisions and provide users with access to Amazon’s video services according to Bloomberg. The box is said to be in development by Amazon’s Lab126 division.

The move would bring Amazon into competition not only with Microsoft’s planned gaming console but also the Apple TV. The now described “beloved hobby” (as portrayed by Apple), seems to becoming a huge competitor in an up and coming industry. Apple is also widely thought to be working on either an update to the Apple TV that would see it gain enhanced capabilities or a completely new standalone television set. It has not been confirmed which is the case exactly yet but time will surely tell.

I was always under the impression that Microsoft owned Amazon for some reason.
