The iPhone is a mobile cell phone that combines rich multimedia with a wide array of Internet capabilities and functionality. The iPhone runs on the Mac OS X operating system and comes amply equipped with a 2.0 megapixel camera, functional multimedia player and complete Internet services such as HTML e-mail, web browsing, text messaging and Visual Voicemail along with WiFi, Bluetooth and EDGE connectivity. The user interacts with the iPhone by using its large 3.5 inch multi-touch screen (320x480 pixels @ 160ppi) that contains a virtual keyboard and buttons. Developers will be able to create a wide variety of applications (apps) that will increase the functionality and personalization of the iPhone for individual users. The iPhone is a quad-band cell phone which uses GSM technology. Users of the iPhone will be able to connect to their home computers via USB on either Microsoft Windows or Mac OS X platforms. Additional features include a iTunes 7, video capability, external controls (volume, ringer control, power, menu, etc.), SIM card slot, built-in speaker and built-in microphone. AT&T Mobility has been announced as the exclusive carrier of the iPhone in the United States while Rogers Wireless will carry the phone in Canada. US prices are $499 for the 4GB model and $599 for the 8GB model when purchased with a 2 year contract (data plan required). Canadians prices are not currently available.
