Back-Up Your Entire IPHONE - How To Dummies Guide (Accepting all suggestion-just edit and add)

From ModMyi - Wiki

THIS GUIDE IS UNDER CONSTRUCTION AND OPEN TO EVERYONE THAT WANTS TO CONTRIBUTE TO THIS GUIDE....THANKS'

Added to main "Guide" site, Link: http://modmyi.com/wiki/index.php/Main_Page

Greetings, have you ever had to do any kind of restore, only to lose all your 3rd party applications that took you forever to install, let alone find. Well I know for my own personal computer, I have always imaged my hard drive and kept it for a rainy day when some app would mess things up. Well I know they don't create (yet) any such great backup software like Acronis Imaging for the Iphone. So I thought there had to be other ways of backing up ones Iphone. As such, I decided to create this open and "under developement" guide, so the experts that know and visit this site can help beginners out. I was surprised that such a guide hadn't allready been made. I myself am a beginner. I have basic experience using the "WinSCP" program from my past experience jailbreaking my own iphone. I now own a 1.1.3 16GB OTB unlocked/jailbroken iphone. I also use Windows Vista.

OK, this will be a "open developing guide", so to all the "Experts" that know good, easy, step-by-steps, please add your suggestions. Also, if you know a better way to format this guide, then go ahead. I really just wanted to get some type of guide started for us beginners...LOL. And PLEASE format in beginners terminology and techniques, if possible.

So go ahead and click on "edit", and lets hear from you.

Thanks.!!!

SUMMERBOARD/WinterBoard THEMES -

If you've found a certain theme you don't want to loose or you've made on yourself, you can save all your SummerBoard/WinterBoard themes by going here:

"3.0+" /private/var/stash/Themes.xxxx

1.1.3 and above: /private/var/mobile/Library/SummerBoard/Themes/

1.1.2 and below: /private/var/root/Library/SummerBoard/Themes/

In this folder you can see all the themes you've downloaded to your device. You can save them for later use so you don't have to waste time in Installer.

PROTIP: By copying icons and backgrounds around, you can forge your very own SummerBoard theme! Just make your own directory and a folder for the icons!

  • All 3.0+ updates by

Nny/KornShaDoW097

INSTALLER APP SOURCES -

/private/var/mobile/Library/Installer/ in 1.1.3

/private/var/root/Library/Installer/ in 1.1.2 and lower

TrustedSources.plist

PackageSources.plist

SAFARI BOOKMARKS -

/private/var/mobile/Library/Safari in 1.1.3

/private/var/root/Library/Safari in 1.1.2 and lower

Bookmarks.plist

PHOTOS -

Your images can be found after ssh'ing(WinSCP'ing) into your iphone or ipod touch at:

/var/mobile/Media/DCIM/100APPLE in 1.1.3

/var/root/Media/DCIM/100APPLE in 1.1.2 and lower

They are all there and named IMG_XXXX.JPG

Where XXXX is a four digit number.

'For SYNCED Photos

Want to keep your SYNCED PHOTOS that are on your iPhone? Use this process.

I did this because I no longer have access to the photos I synced from my PC other than on my iPhone.

Go to /private/var/mobile/Media You will see a folder called Photos Copy EVERYTHING that is in that folder, the "Thumbs" folder AND the "Photo Database" file.

When you are finished doing whatever you are doing with your iPhone then just copy them back to the same location.

THEN REBOOT YOUR iPHONE

Open your Photos on the iPhone and they should all be there like before.

I did this then upgraded my 1st Gen iPhone to 2.0 with SIM unlocked using the guide listed on this site. I did connect to iTunes first and BACKED UP my iPhone but I think that just saves the settings for the screen icons as well as contacts, not sure if it has any effect on the Photos.

'TRANSFER PHOTOS FROM IPHONE TO PC and vice versa'

I discovered this app called CopyTrans Photo that backups, manages and organizes your iPhone photos in albums. Basically, this program is the ultimate tool for iPhone photos. http://www.copytrans.net/copytransphoto.php

VIDEOS -

There's a program called 'iPod Access' which works great. The demo version works fine for transferring videos. Get it here: http://www.findleydesigns.com/ipodaccess/index.html

Recordings -

Just backup this folder and put it back to restore your recordings which are in .m4a format

/private/var/mobile/Media/Recordings

-Nny / Kornshadow097 (Kornshadow0097...)

MUSIC -

Haven't got the time at the moment to go into too much detail, but the music can be found at this address after SSH'ing(WinSCP'ing) into your iphone or ipod touch:

/var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control/Music in 1.1.3

/var/root/Media/iTunes_Control/Music in 1.1.2 and lower

There are various folders there with digits as their names i.e. f00 and these contain your music files. In them there are various files with strange names consisting of letters i.e. UDMU.mp3, these are your individual music files, but the only way to tell what song it is, is by opening it and listening. However, if you import these files into iTunes by dragging, they will automatically be renamed to the correct titles.

If you used the swaptunes app to have two music librarys, then your second library will be at:

/var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control2/Music in 1.1.3

/var/root/Media/iTunes_Control2/Music in 1.1.2 and lower

Notice it is now itunescontrol 2

James

ADDRESS BOOK -

/private/var/mobile/Library/AddressBook/

AddressBook.sqlitedb

AddressBookImages.sqlitedb

--- this might be right for people with 1.1.2+

but for 1.1.1 or below it is the following directory:

/private/var/root/Library/AddressBook/

I sync my contacts using yahoo's mail through iTunes. Works great.

VOICEMAILS -

All things related to visual voicemail are stored here:

/private/var/mobile/Library/voicemail/

Within are all of the voicemails you haven't deleted (and a few that you have), your personal greeting, and the voicemail.db file that keeps track of who has called you.

Copy EVERYTHING just to be sure.

CALENDAR -

/private/var/mobile/Library/Calendar Calendar.sqlitedb

I accually sync my iPhone with Googles calendar after a restore using NemusSync

NOTES -

Notes are important - remember to grab the notes.db file here:

/private/var/mobile/Library/Notes/notes.db

Saving that saves your notes.

Note: Older notes.db files can break MobileNotes.app in 1.1.3 when transplanted with SSH

CALL HISTORY -

Back up the entire folder ~var/mobile/Library/CallHistory it contains call_history.db, which is all of your call history information. just replace it with SSH and make sure that you give it full permissions so that your phone can edit it and add more call history after you restore

SMS -

Your text messages are saved in a database file. It can be found at:

private/var/mobile/library/sms/sms.db

Save the sms.db to keep a record of your texts!

The above might be true for 1.1.2+ But for 1.1.1 and below the directory is: /private/var/root/Library/SMS/sms.db

COOKIES -

Your cookies can be found at:

/private/var/mobile/Library/Cookies

Where the file named cookies.plist contains all your safari cookies.

James

HISTORY/SAFARI SUSPEND PAGES -

Your safari history can be found at:

/private/var/mobile/Library/Safari

Where the history.plist conatins all your safari history.

Also in the above folder is a file called SuspendState.plist which contains the last pages that were open before you closed safari, because as you may know safari opens at the last unclosed pages.

James

BOOKMARKS -

Bookmarks can be found at:

/var/mobile/Library/Safari

In the bookmarks.plist file which can be opened with notepad and you should see your bookmark addresses in there.

James

WALLPAPERS -

Your wallpapers can be found at:

/Library/Wallpaper

Where the file with the xxx.png (xxx is a three digit number) is the actual wallpaper, and is what you will want to copy should you wish to back them up. The only way you can tell which wallpaper is which is by opening it.

James

RINGTONES -

Your ringtones can be found after winscp'ing into your iphone at:

/var/mobile/Media/iTunes_Control/Ringtones

And are named for example like:

SSAT.m4r

And so the only way to tell what ringtone it is, is to play the ringtone.

James

---

  • For 3.0+ you can find your Ringtones in here:

/private/var/stash/Ringtones

the format is .m4r

Tip: copy any ringtones or alarms you want here, it doesn't have a restricted length so feel free to put up an entire song you have converted to .m4r format.

***OTHER BACKUP SOLUTIONS: DO YOU KNOW AN ALTERNATE WAY OF BACKING UP THE IPHONE, THAT'S NOT SSH'ing OR WinSCP'ing?***

Another forum member posted this,

"Make an .ipb file structure with all your mods, that way everytime you update you just upload the .ipb and your good to go."

Not sure how this works, if you know,,, let's hear from you.

  • to add all your 3rd party apps just download "pkgbackup" from cydia.

Not sure if this is a backup process, and not sure how this works. If you know, could you give us a dummies version on how to do this,, let's hear from you.......

This may also work to backup ALL your apps. Appstore and cydia together.

just save everything in:

/private/var/stash/Applications

this should also save your settings for your apps. But I haven't tested it.

  • update, alright I tested it and it seems to make everything open but not work. This includes ALL aps, if you force a db into them, they wont accept new entries. I found a solution so if you want certain files without installing anything you may not like because of errors they may have caused you.

You need to get the pkgbackup, which will install a addressbook entry, then sync and backup in itunes to make a file and then download "iphone backup extractor" they have windows and mac OS versions. n its "FREE" (uselessly only restores 1 file if you dont register...havent found any serial hacks!), there are also ways to get the pkgbackup sofware free too, however i bought mine since they put a lot of work into it and it was much needed.

Finally, once u make your backup just use the extractor and using your knowledge of the infrastructure (above) just select things you want to extract and it will do the rest for you. if you need any help, contact me. Oh, and especially if you know how to hack serials for apps hit me up because I'm going to buy the software key...maybe you can figure out how to make a serial gen that actually works...
