CleanMyMac

Macs get dirty too. Just like any OS, there's tons of files that pile up from daily use, unbeknownst to the average user, which you will most likely never need. These files just waste space on your Mac, and there are many solutions out there to deal with this. CleanMyMac by MacPaw is definitely the best looking one. Testing on a PPC and an Intel box, we saw great performance as well with the app.

A few of the features CleanMyMac uses to muck around and clean up your OS X gunk are Slim Universal Binaries, Clean Unneeded Languages, Logs Rotation, Clean Caches, Quick and Secure Erase, Application Uninstallation, and Killing Trash Left From Buried Applications. To run the basic default scan – two clicks. One to scan, wait a bit, then one to Remove. Of course all of it is easily configured as well – you can select any combination of features to run, and any combination of specifics within those.

My first run of CleanMyMac found over 3.5 GB of extra stuff, from unneeded languages (sure, you may need Japanese or German translation for your Help application – I don't), to caches (some folks like to turn this off – I think it's a good idea to clear your browser's cache though from time to time, and for other apps it's inconsequential for me), to Intel binaries of apps I have on my PPC machine. The scan was quick, and the removal worked well. I've had no issues at all from this, and I first ran the app over 2 weeks ago.

The design is beautifully done, and makes perfect sense from a usability standpoint as well. Following the standard Snow Leopard UI, MacPaw also make use of a good palette of OS X-ish grays with subtle color hues when needed. And they're in the process of a complete redesign from architecture to front end, CleanMyMac2, which will be coming soon (don't worry – existing users of CleanMyMac get a free upgrade to it). This is the first I'd heard of MacPaw, a fresh software company out of Kiev in the Ukraine, and I'm impressed. Reminds me of the attention to detail Panic is known for.

As an added bonus, and a nice reason to keep CleanMyMac in your weekly use bucket, they include a feature to fully delete applications (including all the system files they add) when you drag them to the trash – similar to AppZapper, an app which normally is $12.95 JUST for that functionality. CleanMyMac can be set to automatically launch any time you drag a .app to the trash, to securely and fully delete the app from the system.

It's an efficient idea to have some sort of system management/cleaner software on your Mac – and CleanMyMac does the job beautifully. And of course – we've got a couple licenses to give away. Leave a comment of your thoughts on the software, and we'll pick two commenters to receive a free license!

This is great. My mac has really been running slow ever since it crashed and I lost all my files and even my backup.  This would really come in handy.

  8. shadow25 on April 5th, 2010

I just got a MacBook Pro, I'd love to get some software like this to keep it running great! Already preforms better than Windows!

  9. vinko on April 5th, 2010

I wonder if this application is safe to run on a SSD equipped Mac, due to the limited writes on a SSD?
I know that running tools like Cocktail on SSD will unintentionally reduce the life span of a SSD due to the excessive writes to the drive.

  10. EuGenex on April 5th, 2010

I think it sounds great, im currently using appzapper but i could see this replacing it.

  11. fligabob on April 5th, 2010

I downloaded the free version, and it's FANTASTIC! I've found loads of things which can be deleted! A great application!

  13. fabio.lanza on April 5th, 2010

This software is awesome. I wish i had money to buy a license for me, but i am student. My friend has it and i confirm… GREAT SOFTWARE. Better than onyx in many ways.

  15. drosera on April 5th, 2010

Sweet!  I normally clean my mac manually.  Hopefully I won't have to anymore!  :P Actually, I have been looking for a good program to do this for me.

Oh by the way, when are the winners announced? I don't think it was specified…

  19. oo3 on April 5th, 2010

Awesome. I had to uninstall this when Snow Leopard came out because it kept crapping out on me.

  20. n00neimp0rtant on April 5th, 2010

Tried it out, says I can free up nearly 4GB.  Impressive.  It also gives the file paths of everything that's to be deleted, so technically if I did it manually I wouldn't have to pay for the app.

  21. rhekt on April 5th, 2010

    absolutely stunning!

  22. Zoz on April 5th, 2010

It sounds like a great way to keep my computer working properly and my homework non-corrupted and keep my grades in the clear.

  23. jdys_1991 on April 5th, 2010

Cool! Would love to give this a try, might even buy it afterwards! :D

  24. Tiger92 on April 5th, 2010

  25. Electrodaktylus on April 5th, 2010

I just ran a scan on my MBP and there was 2.8 GB of junk!! I need this. I know I wasn't crazy when I though this machine is slower than when I bought it new… license please.

  26. lov3christian on April 5th, 2010

this program sounds amazing and totally would help with the issues im having with my imac

  27. Nehal3m on April 5th, 2010

That reminds me of CCleaner for my old PC

  28. wannagotopopeyes on April 5th, 2010

This app looks great!!!! Extremely useful, much more than appzapper!

  29. dennder on April 5th, 2010

So, XSlimmer + AppZapper = CleanMyMac?
But, is the cleaning unused langs/binaries a such improvement? It will save you few gigs on your hdd, sure as does xslimmer, but, do you really need to save that much of space, when for a few bucks you can buy yourself an external hdd with tenths times more space?
Look, i upgraded my '08 imac with Velociraptor WD, so i have 300 gigs on the Mac. And i also have a 2TB external hdd and have never thought about insufficient space on HD's.
If this app new how to clean the mess after programs which use .pkg type installation (like MS office), that would be really useful.

Looks awesome! I'm always downloading and deleting stuff for school, so i'm sure that this would come in handy all the time!

  32. Dunkthaman on April 5th, 2010

I've always wondered if just clicking and dragging stuff out of the applications folder would actually delete everything from the app. This software looks great for that.

  33. wakka102 on April 5th, 2010

arent tools like this for Mac dangerous? I assume from all the good reviews this one is relatively safe…

  34. dancinmrhappy on April 5th, 2010

This looks like a much better app than others I've seen.  The interface is clean and straight to the point.  I'd love a code.  Using Macs for awhile now, I still end up having to reformat the drive every 6 months or so.  I'd like to not have to do this anymore… (At least once a year would be nice…)  =  )

  35. hollow0 on April 5th, 2010

I think this application would work out quite well. I've also, thought about something like this to keep the MBP working and running smoothly. A free license would be awesome and thanks for the review!

  36. ozzymonstar on April 5th, 2010

I have 3 macs and i have no idea where all my space keeps going. I just thought it packed up and went to live in somebody else computer.

  37. RaginAsian55 on April 5th, 2010

Nice idea! I've been needing a good clean on my Mac lately but wasn't sure what kind of programs were out there! I've had my Mac for 2.5 years and it's loved every day, but never cleaned. :-

  38. eman561 on April 5th, 2010

I've needed a program like this so bad. im a senior in high school and im about to go into college but my macbook airs been so slow lately. i figured its because my OS is dirty but i cant afford to buy a program like this. CleanMyMac would be really helpfull to me so please hook it up!

  39. twalker3rd on April 5th, 2010

I will be giving this a try with or ith the free license.  There is nothing like a clean machine….

  40. jdm.accord on April 5th, 2010

definitely something I'm interested in as my HD on my MBP is filling up quickly!

  41. az1z on April 5th, 2010

I would love this because all i see on my mac is that stupid spinning circle all day long

  42. cookbenj on April 5th, 2010

wooo!! been looking for something like this for a while now

  43. Eikcuhc on April 5th, 2010

Great cleaning software, used friends before and all I can say is I can tell the difference in application speeds.

  44. Bernie-Mac on April 5th, 2010

This look amazing and exactly what i need.  I have a 5 year old white macbook that is on its last legs and i am always struggling to free up space on its old hard drive, if i had a tool like this it could make my use of my old MB that much more enjoyable and I'm sure it will help lessen the strain on my current macbook while i save up for a new one.  The GUI and everything make this app look very professional and well worth the cost of ownership.

  45. babyhuey7076 on April 5th, 2010

Using a different app for cleaning now. interface is pretty basic on my current one. love the looks of this one being reviewed. would love a free copy? keep up the good work anyways. Thanks

  46. smiska2 on April 5th, 2010

Just download cleanmymac! Did a scan and found over 1 GB of junk!!! Sadly was I was only able to remove about 200mb as it's a trail version.

I was amazed how quick it found everything and all the different options available…All i need now is the full version…
    (cough, free license)

Anyone else begging for a license weather you get it or not it's worth giving the trail version ago.

  47. MikeYuse0406 on April 5th, 2010

I use CleanMyMac on a regular basis and have never found any problems with it. MY macbook runs and performs like new every time. This is a highly recommended software.

  48. axero on April 5th, 2010

tryed few freeware apps, but this one is awsome, nice design and functionality. absolutly gonna need this!

  49. iluveunc on April 5th, 2010

This app sounds amazing. I have had a great experience with my mac so far and I am extremely happy that I put in a few extra bucks to pay for a better machine (than a PC). I thrive on having the power of my 27" iMac in my hands and this program sounds like it could make it even better! A free license would be magnificent and aid me in my iphone development to help prevent encounters with the very few crashes macs are susceptible to. This program is exactly what the mac needs, not those scamming "Free Virus Removal" websites that usually try to pull you into their evil wrath and, in turn, just gifting you with a real virus. The quality of this programs looks and the way you make it sound urges me to think that it must be the first REAL cleanup utility for the mac. Most are scams as mentioned above and with a license I would become an even more successful developer. Thanks for all of your magnificent news on apple and these wonderful programs for the macs/iphones. Keep it up Modmyi!

  50. fcbsaviola7 on April 5th, 2010

First of all, thanks for posting this.. I have been looking for exactly this.  I used to be a pc user and thank the lord I am not anymore.  This is a great tool.  Used the demo and it found tons of stuff for me.  Can't remove it all with the demo, it is a nice little teaser thats for sure lol.. Would love to get a free license! CleanMyMac and ModMyI you rock!

  51. Yerffej on April 5th, 2010

Looks like its very useful. I imagine someone can clean up loads of junk with this program, especially with someone like me who installs and uninstalls stuff on their mac all the time.

  52. adamnur on April 5th, 2010

  73. madrich on April 5th, 2010

Hi everyone I use Ccleaner on my MS PC at work. This sounds like a similar program for Macs. Nice I would like to try it and report back to everyone.

  74. DavetheDog on April 5th, 2010

Oh wait, I thought you were going to talk about compressed air and cleaning wipes…

  75. RelleR on April 5th, 2010

You DO have to be careful when updating your currently installed Applications.  I had to repurchase an Xtorrent code because the CleanMyMac automatically scrapped the info that had my activation code on.  By the time the new Xtorrent update came in (there are so many weekly updates for 2.0) it had cleared my content and Xtorrent had no idea of my previous activation code.  Just a heads up for anyone who gives this application too much trust!

  76. hitman10 on April 5th, 2010

ive been using this for about a year now and its great. Just be careful which progammes you use it on because some issues come up after deleting the waste or so called waste but awesome otherwise.

  77. flintTC on April 5th, 2010

Downloaded the free trial and just used it on my 13 macbook. Cant believe it freed up 3gb of memory for me. Works great and fast.

  78. Jgamble317 on April 6th, 2010

oooo Sounds great! i've been using Disk inventory X to view what was taking up space but then it was up to me to get rid of everything manually… this would be a great way to clean up my mac if i were to be so lucky to receive  a license

  79. Dorkenstein909 on April 6th, 2010

This is BY FAR going to be the most useful app I get in a verryyyyy long time

  80. bbongrip on April 6th, 2010

looks nice  i like the UI.  I currently use Tech Tool 5 and iTool but this new app could eliminate one,  like a twofer  :)

  81. jayfoxer9 on April 6th, 2010

  82. Anticorn on April 6th, 2010

  84. ch0sen1 on April 6th, 2010

Looks like something I could use being that I have so many programs and docs, etc. that I'm sure I don't need in my Mac.  Shows how even Mac can get it's hands dirty on the web.

  85. f99d on April 6th, 2010

My mac is about 1 yr old and gets cluttered through daily usage. I could use CleanMyMac because it seems to be a useful all in one utility to get my mac running smoothly and get rid of all the unnecessary files. Hope to win a license.

  86. sdjmchattie on April 6th, 2010

I've used AppCleaner for a while, which is effective, but this looks a lot more comprehensive!  Will definitely have a go with this.

  87. flounder21 on April 6th, 2010

Perfect timing..I have been doing some research over the last couple weeks on several different cleaning utilities and after reading this little article the seeing the screenshots.  Looks very clean and effective.  Gonna try it out for sure.  Thanks MMi

  91. Photobones on April 6th, 2010

    Wow, first post!

I definitely enjoyed using this software.  I have only owned my mac for a short time but it seems I am prone to "littering" on my HD as much as with my old windows clunker.
Here's hoping for a free licence!

  92. njosnavelin on April 6th, 2010

A friend of mine uses this program. It works great. I just wish I had a Mac to use this with.

  95. ReimoRani on April 6th, 2010

This application is effective and simple. Simplicity is very important and it’s one of the reasons, why people buy a Mac. It deserves a 5 out of 5. Why? Because I can’t think of any bad sides. We all want a fast computer.

  96. andrewbrimberry on April 6th, 2010

Sounds like a great product.  Hopefully I'll win a copy.  Thanks for the give away.

  97. cheekydevil1234 on April 6th, 2010
