'Bricked' iPhone Owners Demand Source Code in Lawsuit
Nov 21, 2009 - 12:30 PM - by pauldanielash

According to a story in Computerworld, plaintiffs in a lawsuit against Apple going back to October 2007 asked the judge on Wednesday to order the company to release the source code to iPhone firmware update 1.1.1. The plaintiffs claim that the update was specifically designed to "brick," or render inoperable, any iPhone that had been unlocked.

The lawsuit alleges that Apple and AT&T violated state and federal antitrust laws by entering into a multi-year exclusive contract naming AT&T as the sole carrier in the United States, and preventing users from being able to unlock their phones... [Read More]

Apple's Plan to "Push" Its GUI to Remotes
Nov 21, 2009 - 11:44 AM - by pauldanielash
Click the image to open in full size.

A patent filed by Apple in 2008 was made public by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on Thursday. Called “Pushing a User Interface to a Remote Device,” the patent describes a method to send the GUI of a device, like an iPod, to a remote with a screen display. Although of limited usefulness with today's technology, this patent may point the way to how multiple devices can be controlled through future "smart remotes" with touchscreens.

A report in MacRumors details the patent, which lists as lead inventor the former William Bull, User Interface Manager for Apple’s iPod... [Read More]

The Show Must Go On For Macworld 2010

Click the image to open in full size.

As we all know, Macworld 2010 will take place for the first time in twenty-six years without the involvement of Apple - a vendor that, to say the least, has some vital connection to the event. Saturday morning the San Francisco Chronicle covered the story that, while known for months and months, is still incredibly difficult to believe.

Imagine if you will for a moment, the thought of accessibility, customization, and ease of use, that the iPhone lockscreen could potentially have. Its probably the most looked at screen simply due to the fact that the damn thing locks so quickly.

Now stop imagining. This is no longer a fantasy. By now I'm sure a good handful of you guys are using LockInfo, Intelliscreen, or some other variation of a lockscreen replacement. These have all given us a taste of the productivity we can achieve from our lockscreens, but each one has fallen short in some way. Whether it be long load times, or mind boggling customization which requires you to edit some code, we all crave that perfect lockscreen.

Today all jailbroken users can rejoice. The time has come for SmartScreen to show us some real power. SmartScreen is a lockscreen replacement for your iPhone/iPod Touch with incredible power. All of the great UI features in the iPhone OS have been brought into this amazing... [Read More]

Say It Isn't So! iPod Touch with Nano Video Quality?
Nov 21, 2009 - 10:14 AM - by Messany
Click the image to open in full size.

9to5Mac has picked up on reports this morning that the elusive iPod Touch with a built-in video camera may ship as early as this spring. While some (like myself) are saying they'll only believe it when they see it, even if we do "see it," will we want to if the rumor is true? Here's what I mean:

Quote:
“The iPod touch 3G with camera will allegedly have the same camera as the updated iPod nano, which shoots video, but not still pictures. Although the video quality on the nano is good for a portable device, it can't compare with the video quality of the iPhone

Yet Another Tablet Rumor: Late and Wildly Expensive?
Nov 20, 2009 - 4:27 PM - by pauldanielash
Click the image to open in full size.

According to a report in DigiTimes, which covers the Taiwanese semiconductor, electronics, computer and communications supply industry, Apple's long-rumored tablet will not be released until the second half of next year. The report also asserts the tablet will come in two models: one with a 10.6-inch display for about $800 - $1000 US and one with a 9.7-inch OLED panel for an almost-unimaginable $2,000 US.

DigiTimes has had a spotty track record on Apple rumors to date, having reported such clunkers as the assertion that all iPods would have cameras in the last refresh of the product line. However, they've had ... [Read More]

AppleInsider revealed today a patent application, filed in May of last year, for a revolutionary new way of measuring pulse, body temperature and blood oxygen, all through the earbuds of your iPod or iPhone.

In an apparent effort to build on the success of the Nike+iPod sensor technology, the patent describes a method of obtaining information about your workout by emitting light from the earbud and using photodetectors to measure blood oxygen levels, body temperature, heat flux and heart rate.

Cisco Rolls Out iPhone Security App
Nov 20, 2009 - 6:55 AM - by Messany
Click the image to open in full size.

Cisco has introduced a new (and free) iPhone app chronicling the latest security threats and offering alerts from Cisco's enormous internet traffic and, most importantly, security experts (better than 500 in all) keeping on eye on the cyber dangers that loom large, occasionally unbeknown to us.

From CNET:

The app also allows users to enter an IP address to determine a website or server's internet "reputation" -- an estimate of risk based on a variety of factors including traffic volume and location.

Attention Hits Hack in 10.6.2 Enabling Atom Support
Nov 20, 2009 - 6:04 AM - by Messany
Click the image to open in full size.

Even though some discovered this information weeks ago, only now is it widely coming to light as high-traffic news and rumor sources like 9to5Mac are finally promoting word that Atom support can be enabled by a hack in 10.6.2. And while this news doesn't come as a major shock to anyone, it is somewhat surprising how quickly a fix has come along to effectively "work around" the decision by Apple to drop support for Atom processors in OS X 10.6.2 - a move that effectively killed Hackintosh netbooks.

Quote:
A Russian hacker was able to slap an old Atom-supporting OSX Kernel on the newer Mac OS 10.6.2 build and get it running on his little Atom netbook.

Bluelounge Refresh Charging Station - Giveaway Inside!
Nov 20, 2009 - 12:03 AM - by ModMyi Reviews
Bluelounge is an award winning design studio, which creates great products to tackle the daily needs of people with design and utility being the 'wow' factor! In 2008 they received a total of 11 design awards!

Recently, I received a blueLounge 'Refresh' for this review and like its title, it is a great charging station with a jaw-dropping simplistic and refreshing design. It basically is an all metal docking station designed to charge up to six different appliances all at one time.

Click the image to open in full size.

It has six built-in connectors, which makes it compatible with more than a 1000 products available worldwide! Out of these, two are iPod and iPhone connectors to charge your favorite apple device. Others include a Mini USB and Micro USB connector which are the main reason for wide compatibility. It even has two USB sockets where you can plugin the USB cables for your device and then connected the device to charge. All these... [Read More]
