This Windows guide will teach you how to restore your iPhone 3GS to 3.1.2 instead of 3.1.3 using the SHSH details stored on Cydia for your 3GS.
This method also works to restore iPhone 3GS devices to 3.1.2 instead of 3.1.3 for many that have encountered an error with sn0wbreeze (as long as you haven't panic'd and done a normal 3.1.3 restore via iTunes already).
If you have already restored on stock Apple firmware 3.1.3 via iTunes this guide may leave your phone unable to connect to the network (the 3.1.3 baseband and 3.1.2 firmware may not work well together).
The first requirement is that Cydia has your SHSH details stored for 3.1.2. If you have opened Cydia and seen green text at the top "This device has SHSHs on file for iPhone OS: 3.1.2" then you can restore to 3.1.2.
You need to edit your host file to connect to Saurik's server instead of Apples to sign the 3.1.2 firmware when you restore.
Download iPhone 3GS 3.1.2 firmware
Windows Vista and Windows 7 users make sure the program Notepad has Administrator privileges (find Notepad, right click, select Run as Administrator).
On your Windows PC Browse C->WINDOWS->system32->drivers->etc
(if you installed Windows on a different drive letter browse to that on instead of "C")
Right click on hosts and select Open.
Choose Notepad and click OK.
Add "74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com" at the end of the file. Save it.
Before continuing enter restore mode. One way to do this is disconnect your phone from the computer and turn your phone off. Start iTunes. Hold the home button on your phone and plug it in. Continue holding the home button until iTunes indicates you are in restore mode.
Now you'll be at a screen similar to the one below. Hold the Shift key while you click Restore.
Browse to the 3.1.2 firmware file you downloaded earlier. Select it and click Open.
Click Restore.
iTunes will does its thing.
Once done your phone will reboot and you'll be back on 3.1.2.

this one didnt work for me. this sucks…. my phone wouldnt connect to wifi so i followed apples suggestions and did the "erase all settings" or whatever and it messed up my phone.. so i hit restore and it put my phone to 3.1.3

I had the same issue. I read that the baseband cannot be downgraded, but the software can. I spent a few hours trying different things but the one that worked for me was this:
After 3014 error:
Run redsnow (0.9.2)
Select yes when it asks if your 3gs is newer (regardless if it's old)
Redsn0w then gives options to jailbreak or tethered boot. Select Tethered boot.
after 30-60 seconds iphone will start to boot.
Activate via itunes
start blackra1n
"make it ra1n" <- you should know how to go on from here
I did this with the older iboot 3gs.
I attempted to use only blackra1n, but i ran into a problem. The phone booted and blackra1n was on it, but the hackivation wasn't working, i could not get signal. I'm assuming this was because i was still using the newer baseband. redsn0w let me boot up the phone after the 3014 error and activate. I also couldn't get redsn0w to initially jailbrake, which i think is because of the activation process.
Again, the baseband stays at 05.12.01, and cannot be unlocked.

I am on windows 7, i signed in as administrator, after editing the hosts, it wouldn't let me save, asking me to save to my documents, and so I did. I then copied it back and replaced the original hosts with the new one. Haven't tried restoring it yet cos I don't need it right now. Just testing the hosts pointing to gs.apple.com.

ok i have a problem, my service right now is flat out frustrating, im on 3.1.2 (7D11) with my serial number 4th and 5th digit 46, im currently jailbroken using blackra1n and my service jumps constantly (going in and out of service while im sitting in the same spot, it's pretty unreliable..my ? is what do I do? I don't want to upgrade to 3.1.3, but it can't function properly with the jailbreak i used, I was trying to restore using the above method and it doesn't work im getting the "software not compatible" error. I was thinking of re-jailbreaking using redsnow instead of blackra1n but I have to get it restored first to 3.1.2…..Also my baseband is 05.11.07

These kinds of problems are why lots of us are waiting for the official dev team jailbreak.
I am sitting at OS 3.0.1 with baseband 04.26.08 using ATT Carrier 6.0 and everything works correctly.
Just because Apple comes out with some goofy update …that doesn't mean we should all embrace it
and then mess up our jailbroken phones.

Need some help. I cant open the ipsw firmware on windows 7 ultimate. can someone suggest what program i need. made the mistake of update with 3.1.3 from snowbreeze and it updated baseboard. just wondering if im sol and have to wait now till dev team hopefully release a method for this

This is my 1st day with my jailbroke iPhone. I didn't see green writing on the Cydia but I did choose the "make it easy for me" option on Cydia. Will it take time to be saved? I also tried all of the steps to restore to 3.1.2 and I am also getting "this device isnt eligible for the requested build" My phone is frozen I can't do anything. Okay people, I've read the comments and guides restoring the 3.1.3 to 3.1.2 and I can say that after a few real hours with it, I was able to do so. My 3GS was already jailbroken with 3.1.2 and froze up and the only thing I could do was force it into recovery mode……I will say that after multiple attempts, I was a bit frantic as having jailbroken my phone, I've become quite spoiled with it……Soooooooooooo here goes. With my 3.1.2, I did follow the guide (the 1st one (http://modmyi.com/guides/?p=3146)) but it didn't work. I tried multiple times just to confirm and still no joy. My phone would get to the last part and then go back into Recovery Mode and iTunes through up an error. Now it is said that you cannot jailbreak a 3.1.3 phone however, I was like f**k it and tried anyway. It went through the jailbreak process and it completed however (I was only able to make emergency calls) it was still in Recovery Mode. I then attempted again to restore back to the 3.1.2 and guess what???????? IT WORKED!!!!!! I'm not sure if the preceding steps involved other than downloading 3.1.2 made any difference but you may just try forcing a recovery on your iphone, then jailbreaking it, and lastly, restoring it using version 3.1.2. I hope this helps……..
This is what worked for me……I forced my 3GS into Recovery Mode, ran Blackra1n and jailbroke it again ( it will still be in recovery mode but you can see the slider and make emergency only calls) and then ran a Restore from iTunes to version 3.1.2 from 3.1.3…I hope this helps!
i upgraded my 3gs (old boot rom) to 3.1.3 by mistake…….went crazy for a while thinking i wasnt gonna be able to jailbreak it for a long time, then i just followed the instructions above and it worked. itunes did give me a 1015 error and my phone was stuck on the cable screen but i used quickpwn to activate it.
I tried in four different computers with xp, vista and windows 7 in last few days. Finally, I go back to 3.1.2 (3gs new boot rom), and did not save SHSHS before. But the baseband stays in 05.12.01. It means I can't get my T-mobile service back.
Any solution?!!
It works , thanks to Cydia Server , just did a custom FW 3.1.2 restore and Ultrsn0w to unlock amd works like a charm on my 3GS(oldbootrom)
Just followed the directions and it worked. Only thing I had to do different was copy and paste from notepad (run as admin) because the instance of notepad opening 'host' wasn't being run as admin. Copied and pasted to the instance run as admin and saved as 'host' (no file type, not .txt) and overwrote the existing 'host', after having added in the cydia server address. Other than that it worked like a charm.
I had to do the restore because even though Snowbreeze 1.5 worked, I was getting memory leaks galore and everything ran more slowly (on my 3GS). That and Phoenix3200's 'Music Controls' no longer controlled ipod.app and it kept running in the background even when other music apps were opened. In case you aren't familiar with 'Music Controls', it isn't supposed to work that way. So all is well and I'm back on the tried and true 3.1.2.

I can't seem to get this (or any other tutorial for a custom 3.1.2 firmware install) working. I've downloaded the necessary firmare, my Cydia says that it has SHSHs on file for 3.1.2, I've modified my hosts file and it pings to the new IP properly, but every time I try to restore in iTunes it only gives me a 'Restore and Update' option which then leads to 3.1.3 (I stop at this point every time since I know what a hassle it can be to downgrade from 3.1.3)
Anyone have any suggestions?
When I extract the downloaded firmware, I get an error at the end, stating "The path '1_3.1.2_7D11_Restore' does not exist or is not a directory." Anyone ever see this or know how I can fix this??? I have 3Gs 16 gb at 3.1.2 jb and unlocked by blackrain thered though. i downloaded some stuff from cydia needed to boot but ip stuck in recovery mode ; i used cydia shsh file system and that worked for me , now i need jb and unlock too, i have two questions to know from community please help 1 -coming back to 3.1.2 through shsh ,Does this also reverts the baseband ? 2- what is the best method now to JB and UNLOCK ? waiting for help

denebola's custom IPSW worked for me. Saved me a lot of time as i got my iphone 3gs after the 3.1.2 sigs where removed so i couldnt backup to cydia server. Anyway if you get "software not compatible" error just use 7zip to extract the IPSW inside the IPSW to your desktop and then run restore through itunes. Worked like a charm. Thanks Denebola!

the device was pending TSS for 2 weeks, and now it say that "this device have SHSHs on file for iphone os: 3.1.3".
how come it was shsh'ing for 3.1.3 and not for 3.1.2? will i be able to restore original 3.1.2 firmware if needed?

Thanks a lot for the guide, I had to switch my phone off due to a network upgrade and it tried to update me to 3.1.3. Now I'm back with a jailbroken phone and a grin on my face you couldn't take off with sandpaper.

If you're sure you did it right (use a ping) then check for a transparent proxy server upstream (maybe find a techie friend if this is too hard!) as they will resolve gs.apple.com all over again.
When I alter the"host " file and try to connect to iTunes I get an error to the effect that Itunes cannot access my phone if I then go back and undo the alteration to the "host" file and then try to connect to Itunes it immediately starts the restore process and I'm on my way back to jail with 3.1.3.. Maybe Apple has done its usual trick of countering our freedom seeking community again. I know this a game to us but to this Corporation loosing to us will cost them millions. They walk a thin line called "Unfair Trade Practices".
If they would allow VOIP over 3G I might even loose interest in this game.

i have used blackra1n to jailbreak and unlock before, but for some reasons when i turned off my iphone and then turn back on, there was boot logo "usb and itunes" have to put the iphone into the recovery mode. if i want to pass by this boot logo, i have to use blackra1n to start up the iphone for everytime i turn off/on the phone……that's really suck….that's why i want to restore to 3.1.2 then try use redsn0w in stead of blackra1n………

the reason i want to restore because i just used the blackra1n to jailbreak before. now, everytime i turn off the phoen and then turn back on, it showed the boot logo (usb and itunes), it put me into the recovery mode, then tried the step described above, but there was error….

I have a weird problem : I NEVER updated to 3.1.3, always had 3.1.2 (7D11) with iBoot-359.3.2 on 5.11.07 BB on my iPhone 3gs , but the SHSH file saved on Cydia shows 3.1.3 . I Used Redsn0w & Blacksn0w earlier to JB & unlock it. But,due to wifi & other issues I used the RESET the iPHONE & it bricked. Unable to restore…any advise please ?

i jailbroke my Iphone 3g and had 3.1.2 ShSH saved on cydia. However, my 3G was stolen and I recently purchased a 3GS that came with stock 3.1.3 and it is obviously it is a newer MC model. Is it possible to downgrade to 3.1.2 and jailbreak my phone using the saved 3.1.2 information ? If not is there any other way for me to tether my phone to share My phones 3G connection or internet on my Laptop. There are lots of reasons why I LOVE being free from my Apples grasp but this is one of them.

I updated the sorik server IP address on my hosts file in Mac. I tried restoring the downloaded framework 3.1.2 to my iphone by pressing Alt+restore (Mac user) it says file isn’t eligible for this device.
When I used the same file on pwnage and created another file and when I am using that file to restore it throws 1604 error message.
Whole night was wasted in this

There should be a forum that strictly states "If your wifi stops working do not perform a network reset but just reboot your iphone".
I found this out the hard way just like you. All I had to do was just reboot my iphone for the wifi to come back on not a network reset. I ended up returning my iphone (after restoring 3.1.3) & got a new one that luckly still had the 3.1.2 firmware.
So after JB'ing tmy new phone he samething happened, no wifi …so I just rebooted my iphone using SBSsettings and BAM my wifi came back on.
I read somewhere on here where someone was able to fix there phone w/out restoring theu itunes. Once I find it I will post it so there might still be luck

I have a new laptop running Windows7 and iTunes 9 same as my old pc. Can I use this method to re-jb. I have 3G[s] MC model 5.11.07, fourth and fith SER numbers are below 40. or do I have to use my old pc. I would like to be able to sync my iDevices with my new pc and completely rid myself of the old one and Vista. The reason I need to desperatly re-jb is my phone crashes several times a day and goes into SafeMode and Cydia is basically useless. Any help is greatly apprecaited.

Something that would be a good idea to add to this guide: iTunes needs to be shut down before you save the host file, or it wont work. Some PCs may need to be rebooted as well after saving the host file, before continuing. Doing that fixed my problem during the authentication phase.
PLS HELPPPPPPPPP…. i have ben trying to recover my iphone for the last 3 days and i cant do anything about it. Im on recovery mode at the moment i have done as what as was told above. Going step by step but after downloading iphone 3gs 3.1.2 firmware. It goes into my zip file and when i extract it i can see eveything in the folder. But soon as i go to itunes shift restore when i go to the folder theres NAHTHING in it.

I apologize if someone has already posted this, but I did not see it when reading through this forum. Anyhow, I downgraded my firmware from 3.1.3 to 3.1.2 on my 3GS (after I had accidentally upgraded to 3.1.3 through itunes) however, the baseband did not downgrade. It stayed at 05.12.01 & now I am unable to unlock it!!! So my question is, what's the point of having SHSHs on file to downgrade firmware? Just to jailbreak? But that can be done through Spirit much quicker than this whole process and that can be done on 3.1.3. I thought the point of SHSHs was to be able to unlock your iPhone again after accidentally upgrading to 3.1.3. I tried adding blacksn0w on cydia to unlock & nothing happened…I also tried ultrasn0w and nada….

I do everything as posted here, change host file (74.208.10.249 gs.apple.com), enter DFU (method posted here home button for 20sec, with a plug and an itunes icon on iphone screen; and DFU with total turned off screen) using iTunes 9.1.1.12 (9.0.0.70 too) on windows 7 and XP, on 2 different pc's and nothing, itunes gave me 3194 error, "this device isn't eligible for the requested build".
Does this happen to anybody o you?
What I think is wrong is the redirection by host file (by the way, I checked and works great with other IP ex. google's IP 209.85.195.104). I think Apple changed its redirection of gs.apple.com, or something is not working well here.

my cydia has a 3.1, 3.1.2, 3.1.3 SHSHs, will i be able to downgrade?
my only question would be, is it save to use the new itunes 9.2 or do i need to uninstall it and install another vercion?…………………………..

There are no .ipsw files in the link given in the guide for 3.1.2 firmware.
Here's some info for those having trouble downgrading from 4.0 to 3.1.2 for jailbreaking with sn0wbreeze porpuses….
if you are getting a 1015 error after downgrading on itunes, and your phone is still showing the itunes icon and cable on the screen, DO NOT PANIC!, just blackra1n your phone and 3.1.2 will be working right away.
btw, if you will be using blackra1n you MUST save blackra1n.exe on this folder "C:Program FilesCommon FilesAppleApple Application Support" otherwise you will get a error about a DLL missing.
Once you do that you can just create your custom ipsw with sn0wbreeze as intructed on here…

ABSOLUTELY works like a charm! I stupidly updated to ios 4.0 and lost my JB. Luckily i had my SHSH file on Cydia. I did the restore, received the 1015 error message, ran blackra1n and back to 3.1.2!
One thing, if blackra1n keeps failing and saying that certain .dll files don't exist, just move the blackra1n installer to C:/ProgramFiles/CommonFiles/Apple/AppleApplicationSupport/ and run it there.
