This guide teaches you how to jailbreak the latest Apple firmware 3.1.3 for the iPhone 3G, iPod Touch 1G, and older iPod Touch 2G using the redsn0w 3.1.2 loophole.
Before we begin there are some things you need to know. First of all for the iPhone 3GS, iPod Touch 3G, and the newer iPod Touch 2G (model number beginning with "MC") jailbreaking 3.1.3 is NOT POSSIBLE at the moment. Do not try. We strongly recommend you DO NOT upgrade to 3.1.3 if you use one of these devices.
Update: Again just to make sure it's painfully obvious . . . You can not jailbreak 3.1.3 for the following devices:
iPhone 3GS
iPod Touch 3G
iPod Touch 2G (model number beginning with "MC")
Next order of business is for iPhone 3G users. DO NOT Upgrade to 3.1.3 or follow this guide if you need an unlock. Upgrading to 3.1.3 will upgrade your baseband which is not currently unockable.
If you have an iPhone 2G you can jailbreak and unlock 3.1.3 by following this guide.
Lets download the necessary files.
Download the 3.1.2 firmware for your device:
iPod Touch 1G & iPod Touch 2G users you'll need to find the 3.1.2 .IPSW that iTunes downloaded onto your computer when you originally updated to 3.1.2
Next Download redsn0w:
Windows redsn0w 0.9.4 download
OS X redsn0w 0.9.4 download
Now that we have everything downloaded connect your device to iTunes and allow it to download and update to 3.1.3.
Once the update via iTunes to 3.1.3 is done close out itunes and start up redsn0w.
Clck Browse, select the 3.1.2 firmware that you downloaded for your device, and Open.
redsn0w processes and identifies the firmware
click Next, redsnow will do some work
Select the options you want. Do not select Already pwned or Unlock. For this guide we're just installing Cydia. Click Next.
Make sure your device is turend off and plugged in, then click Next.
We have to get into DFU mode. Simple follow the prompts. First hold the power button for 3 seconds.
Continue holding the power button and press the home button. Hold both for ten seconds.
Release the power button but continue holding the home button for 30 seconds.
redsn0w works its magic
Once completed the redsn0w windows says Done! Click Finish and redsn0w exits. Things will still be going on on your device so don't mess with it until it has fully rebooted to the lockscreen. Congrats! You have jailbroken 3.1.3 for your Device!

What is you have a 3GS with model number starting with MB?
I thought all of the Model numbers for the 3GS were MC. I got mine day one & it says MC. Weird.

They upgraded the firmware on the 3GS. This is why if you wanted to JB it you had to do a tethered JB everytime you restarted your phone.

If you are having trouble with redsn0w crashing right click on redsn0w.exe and then click on “Properties” switch to “Compatibility” tab and make sure you check “Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 3)”

Worked perfectly on my "Non-MC" model iPod 2g! FYI I think the pictures on the guide are a little out of date. All the steps are correct except the redsn0w version is "0.9.4" not "0.9.2" like in the guide. Thanks ModMyI!
haha Jamal, yeah we took all the screenshots for the guide and then the dev team released 0.9.4. Since all the steps are the same we figured it would be okay!
I dont get it, First it says to jailbreak 3.1.3, then in the instructions you have to choose firmware 3.1.2??? WTF is going on here?

I downloaded a compressed 3.1.2 firmware file for the 2G. The files were extracted and saved. When I tried to use RedSn0w there was nothing in those files recognizable as 3.1.2 firmware. Is there a special way to unzip these files? I opened every folder. There were no files *.ipsw. There is a firmware folder containing the folders"all_flash and dfu. Where do I direct RedSn0w? This phone came to me with unlocked 3.1.2. My husband updated to 3.1.3 via iTunes. I understand how RedSn0w works. I just need to know how to feed it the 3.1.2 it needs. Please help. Thank you. I am a PC user Windows XP.

I did this and it work just fine. Cydia is installed. But what i hake to do so that my apps works in the iphone? I had the blackra1n and i remember to put two sources in cydia so the apps works, xsellize and another one wich i dont remember. I installed xsellize but none of my old apps are working, i cant install them….can someone help me please?

@Nytesnypr And for all PC/Windows users. RedSn0w can find the downloaded 3.1.2 firmware file if you do the following:
Click the appropriate download link.
A dialog box will ask if you want to open or save the file. SELECT SAVE.
Another dialog box will ask you for the SAVE location. I chose desktop.
The file download begins.
After the download is completed another dialog box will ask if you want to open, open folder, or close. Select CLOSE.
Go to the location where you saved the download. You should see a folder with a zipper. Left click on the folder one time. You will then see the folder name–*.zip. Right click one time on the folder name. When the dialog box appears choose RENAME. The name in the box will highlight in blue. Left click one time on the name. The blue will disappear. Change the "zip" to ipsw and press enter. You will then get a warning dialog box asking you if you really want to do this. Select YES. The firmware icon will then change from a folder to the firmware icon(a little cube.)
Run RedSn0w. Browse to this file. RedSn0w will now be able to process and recognize 3.1.2 and proceed with its program.

Great information but something that may help others. For this to work as described above you have to allow file extensions to be shown. If not it will not work.
You will need to open windows explorer, Then go to TOOLS>FOLDER OPTIONS. You will then have a window open up with four tab options. You will need to choose VIEW. Below that you will see a list of boxes with some checked and some unchecked. You will find one that says HIDE EXTENSIONS FOR KNOWN FILE TYPES. Uncheck this box and then it will allow you to change the file type as described in the post above.
@droppinbottomThanks for the additional info and favorable review. Yes some PC/windows users may need to do this. WindowsXP showed the file extensions without changing the folders view option. It is easy enough to do and should definitely be the first step.

Should download the latest version of iTunes, which is 9.0??? Will that screw anything up?!? I've run the redsnow and the phone hangs at a black screen so I reran redsnow and marked the box as rerun as tethered. Everything appears to work but when I reboot the phone cydia is still not loaded. Am i missing a step? Or am I not waiting long enough for the phone to power cycle. I've now let it sit for 5 mins and it's still at a black screen. Not off but black

Hey Guys, for those PC windows user, when you downloaded firmware is in the zip form, it is due to the browser problem, all you have to do is rename the ext of .zip to .ipsw , you wil then see the firmware. Good Luck

I have a 2G iTouch (non "MC" model) and i have followed these steeps EXACTLY and redsn0w does it's thing but after my iTouch reboots itself and brings me to the unlock screen the "Cydia" app/icon isn't there. I have done this SOO many times and still, nothing comes up. I am using a Windows Vista, Redsn0w 0.9.4, 3.1.3 version 2G iTouch "non-MC" model, and have already downloaded the Firmware 3.1.2 .ipsw file that i need.

good work! Thank god, just got this phone from my brother and it was already jailbroken. I installed some sh*tty program to download stuff faster and itunes said it didn't recognize it and had to restore it, so i lost my jailbreak and then it updated to this 3.1.3, which killed my jailbroken dream!!! This is magic!!! You guys are great!!!!

Seems like no one is answering the question so i'll ask it again: When I use redsnow to jailbreak my 3.1.3 iphone 3g, cydia was installed, but all the apps I had from other places stored in itunes will not sync with my iphone now. It seems as tho this downloaded Cydia, but did not jailbreak my phone……….any suggestions??? Any help is appreciated!

I did this this to my iPhone 2G but then the WIFI stopped working! so i downgraded to my original 3.1.2 but and its still not working! Then i tried to restore it again but now it wont sync with my computer.. Im using Windows XP and I jailbroke/Unlocked it with redsn0w 0.9.4 then blackrain when restored to 3.1.2!
I was having a issue with the jailbreak not working. It was all to do with holding the home button for about ten seconds longer after the phone goes into recovery mode. I was releasing it once my pc recognized it which wasn't allowing it to happen. You need to continue to hold the home button until the hard drive icon pops up and begins the jailbreak. I think this would be some good info to add to the guide.
So, if I've downloaded a 3.1.2 IPSW file and pointed to that in the beginning of the process, am I running on 3.1.2 or 3.1.3?

i just try to jailbreak my ipodtouch but they get stock on waiting for reboot

Just make sure you set program to run as XP not vista. Right click on program,properties, then set to run as xp.
Its its in Settings -> General -> Model, then i have MB!
I'm trying to jailbreak an iphone 3g with 3.1.3, I trued using sn0wbreeze but that did work because itunes shows an error everytime I try to restore it using the modified ipsw.
I tried using resn0w 9.4 but that dosent work either, everytime redsn0w says its done, the iphone will just freeze on a black screen, i have to hold the home and sleep button together to reset it and get back at the homescreen realizing that its still not jailbroken.
mine keeps getting stuck on the reboot part? any idea y?

i have downloaded 3.1.2 firmware and redsn0w 0.9.4
i open redsn0w and browse for 3.1.2 and it says ipsw fully identified
it asks me if i have an MC and i press no
i then press next
it says connecting to server and something DFU 100% then red snow closes and does nothing
this happens on windows(7) and mac
i have used different versions of redsn0w. none work
what should i do now?

Newbee here. If I read this correctly I am not supposed to upgrage my 3g to firmware 3.1.3 via itunes, but download 3.1.2 through the link. but i already have 3.1.2 on my iphone 3g, why am I updating it? The first part of the guides starts off "

Then it goes on to say upgrade to 3.1.3 and disconnect and run redsn0w. "Once the update via iTunes to 3.1.3 is done close out itunes and start up redsn0w."

to pvenu follow this guide cause you have the exact phone as i do…and mine jailbroke and thats including model mb not mc so just try it a couple of times and it will work make sure and use redsn0w 0.9.4

also, for windows 7 users having trouble…the downloaded redsnow zip IS supposed to be a ZIP file, extract it to get the .exe file. (windows 7 likes to play games with file extensions and rename them .zip files from time to time). if you need to change them you'll have to click enable extension mgmt. in the control panel (—ctrl panel–>foler options–>"view" tab—>UNcheck "hide extensions for know file types" ….ugh, windows 7.

She asked me for an app i was using that I only had the demo or lite version of in other words free. Then with a couple swift taps and search she downloaded the whole app for fee? Full version? Wow, couldnt have been easier, all screens just as the tutorial says. A tip – READ the section on getting into DFU mode and have your device in-hand before you click Next. (Power for 3 seconds, Pwr+Home for 9 seconds, Home for 30 seconds.)

Ok I did all the steps. I have one question. How do I find the firmware for a 1G currently at 3.1.3 for a 3.1.2 which is what you need for the dev-shed program to work. I just recently upgraded from a 2.1.2 and don't have the 3.1.2 .IPSW "…that iTunes downloaded onto your computer when you originally updated to 3.1.2". Basically I never updated to that. Am I sorry out of luck? I just erased a bunch of paid apps trying to get this thing going and I've been at it for a couple of hours.

First it says not to update to 3.1.3, but then the a few steps later to update anyway.
Anyhow, I had already updated to 3.1.3 a few months ago since MMS was a bit more important to me than a jb iphone. I opened up redsn0w with the hacked ipsw and my iphone is now jailbroken. My firmware is 5.12.01 prior to and after redsn0w.

Just to let u know that It is possible to JB on iPhone 3GS on 3.1.3(7E18) version with Modem firmware 05.12.01 by "Spirit"( u can find it easily in net).It is very easy & takes only less then a mintue to JB the iPhone.

Restored to 3.1.2 tried same copy of blackra1n, didn't work. Stuck in recovery mode for hours.
