icon replacement problems
Hello all. I have searched and searched pretty much all day with no luck.
As you can see from the photo below, I have done some light modding. i changed out my wallpaper and dock via winder board. I, however, have replaced my icons all through ssh. My question(s) are:
1. looking at the screen shot below: notice how the Wells Fargo and Navigon have that oval layer over the top part of the icon? how do i get rid of that. it obviously fit with the original icon size and design but does not with my new ones.
2. looking at the screen shot below, notice on the icons like Navigon, Wells Fargo and Reel Director, there is a black background? how do i get rid of that?
3. can someone tell me how to replace my icons through winter board, as I have not found out anything that talks about icon replacement without having it a part of a theme. will replacing through winter board solve the problems above for future instances?
thanks to any that can help.

Sounds like you may have to SSH into your theme icon folder and replace each icon that your having a problem with that way.

question 1 and 2
you can use Adobe CS 4 to change the .png file to look like what you want.
question 3
you can build icons that you want and place then in a folder called what ever theme you want then place a Icon folder in it. Then just place what icons you want to use in there. You will have to SSH to import them in to themes folder. Then select them in winterboard DONE. There is an replacement icon of the phone attached. Does this answer your question?
I type slow I guess lolIf I have helped you please hit the Thanks button.

thank you for the quick reply...the oval shaped overlay that i pointed out in my screen shot does not dissapear regardless of what icon i replace it with. i have the icons done perfectly how i like them (they are other peoples icons) but for some reason the oval overlay stays there. is there a way i can get rid of it? turn it off? if i do the process through winter board will it still show up?

Could it be a icon overlay UI image from a theme that you have installed?

winterboard will alow you to use any combination of themes. you will have to SSH and copy icons to themes folder on idevice. Then I would uncheck everything in winterboard. Is it still there? If not then just check theme by theme and see what theme makes it return.
crap slow again
I think I maybe to long windedIf I have helped you please hit the Thanks button.

thats just it....thats what i have done. the overlay and black box background are not part of the actual icon. it appears that the prgram (because many app store icons have that same oval overlay) has added that. i don't where to find it because i don't think it is an additional psd file. does that make sense?
yeah, ok. i will try this and reply back. this must be happening to other people (noobs like me
) and obvioulsy there isnt any info on it out there...
i don't think its from a theme i installed because many (prob 50=% ) of the app store icons have the same oval overlay. were you able to look at the screen shot link i included above (dont know why it only showed a link...) could there be some ui image settings or info for each app that i need to access to delete the overlay?Last edited by ZosoPlayer; 11-13-2009 at 03:53 PM. I would say that there might be a ui image (like blkcadi said) that changes it. If you uncheck all themes you can narrow it down to a specific theme then find it in the theme and delete it.

fixed the screen shot above so you can see it. ...
take a look at the wells fargo icon (which is a replacement icon) and for example the flashlight icon (which is the original icon). see how they both include that lightness on the top half of the icon? this was included in the design of the icon i believe. for some reason, if the original icon included this lightening design, which many many original app store icons do, then for some reason it does not disappear when you replace the icon. it must be an added effect that is coded somewhere else. i have to imagine that an established themer has to deal with this issue? am i making sense?
alright. i am going to try and stop trying to explain it, lolLast edited by ZosoPlayer; 11-13-2009 at 04:00 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

^ not always, sometimes an overlay will effect icons without being selected in a theme. I know it sounds odd but I have seen it happen.

un check all theme then SSH make a new theme folder and copy it there.
Alos here is a link on what tio name the icons
WinterBoard App Icon Names - ModMyi - Wiki
would the overlay have just been installed in cydia with a theme? I am not sure then. I was think it was in a theme that he has installed. If he unchecks all themes and just make a theme with just icons and it look the way he wants then he can just put it above all other things in winterboard and it should override anything from the other themes that fall under it. If that does not work I really am at a loss. Sorry manLast edited by JJMA; 11-13-2009 at 04:07 PM. Reason: Automerged Doublepost

I am having the same issue, however AIM is the issue. No matter which Icon i create choose etc....AIM application (of this i am convinced) is adding a mask to the icon image to give the rounded rectangle shape)
There is a *.png file located in the AIM apps folder. This has been replaced as well as the theme icon, both named the same, both the same file. The image is correct but the rounded rectangle and background are wrong. I want them to be transparent backgrounds, however they are black. We are having the same issue. I am only having the issue with this apps icon.
I am including the wallpaper. This is an iOne_theme i've been working on with some icons from iOne, white apple, deoneo, and the web. The media icon, biplane, briefcase globe and camera were all downloaded from google search and edited to have transparent backgrounds with shadows. the AIM icon as you can see is screwed up....was edited the same way as the others.

so you are saying that the application is changing whatever icon you place in the /private/var/stash/Applications/NAME OF APP.app folder. You replace that icon and the application some how changes what that icon looks like? Is that what you are saying?

JJ, thanks for the quick reply. The icon is the one that I chose via ssh etc. However the background should be transparent This is the only app giving me the problem. I even renamed one off the "working" icons, the result is the same

icon background
OK finally found out how to attach files, lol.....
application: AIM instant messenger - paid version
issue: icon background is black
desc: I created an icon with a transparency background in PS-CS3 for AIM. This was done for all icons without issue. I then copy the files to the icons folder of my theme, food good measure i rename the original icons and copy the files to the app's folder as well.
The icon I copy is being displayed, however the icon's background is black. I am sending the files zipped up.
the name of the icon is AIM_paid_icon.png. The original is in the apps folder, renamed 0*.*
In an effort to resolve, I copied my facebook icon to my AIM folder by renaming it both in the apps folder and in the theme icon folder. Note how the same icon is represented differently.
Theme attached for review
Thanks for the assistance, I'll be online for some time trying to "pay it forward" !!
Thanks again for your help !!!

Any luck with the suggestions provided? specifically removing all themes and simply adding them back one atta time? I'm about to remove the app entirely, reboot and then re-install......

i found out for me that going through winterboard was the way to go. i don't have any problems with overlays when i use winterboard. so basically i created an icon.theme folder with another folder inside labeled icons. any icons i want to replace i put in this folder. if i find new icons i like it is just a matter of replacing them or adding new ones. the perfect solution for me.
