Most people in doing any of this should know what you need, in regards to creating and using themes here for download to your iPod Touch/iPhone/etc.. Winrar is a great program in which I use all the time, when downloading anything here or anywhere. You can get this program by typing this into Google, (free download of Winrar by Cnet) because everything they have on that site is virus checked. Also we should all know what you need for SSHing your iPod touch/iPhone with transferring any theme/or things in your themes, you will need (what I use) is WinSCP and the same thing goes with that when downloading it for personal use. WinSCP will allow you to plug your iPod touch/iPhone in and than open up WinSCP and you will see your computer info. on the left side of the page and your iPod info. on the right side. So for any type of personal theming or downloading of someone elses theme works here or anywhere you will need them both to make things easier. Hope this info. helps others, and good luck
I am a total newbie. its faster to look for a good theme on my PC than on my iphone... so i'm assuming this is how i get the themes i download from the website to my phone... which it looks like i do through WinSCP right? so whats winrar? what do i use that for?
Winrar is an extraction program which I use and trust from Cnet and if your going to look for themes everywhere online, not just in forums. You will need this program to extract the files, either to your desktop of like I do and create a special folder in my Documents and name it (Themes) Plus, there are way better themes in this forum and other iPhone/iPod Touch forums.
Winscp is good if you need to set permissions and such, but most people can use an iPhonebrowser that is Drag&Drop like iFunbox, Diskaid, iPhonebrowser, etc without having to get into the whole SSH protocols. It is usually easier for most people to grasp. No user names, passwords, or IP addresses are required.
I use Winrar as well and have used 7Zip(free) in the past too. Most themes are packaged/compressed using the .rar format which the two aforementioned apps then unpack before you transfer them to your phone.
I also like using ifunbox. It made everything super easy! I am a super newbie and this kind of thing. There are some good youtube how to viedos if you google "how to make a winterboard theme" I am using gimp (free from cnet) as my image editor.
Now I just have to play with other stuff that is not a basic them.
Yes, winscp is what program you use to ssh themes into your iphone, and winrar will extract the files once they are downloaded because you need files to be in a folder to ssh them into your phone
