I use a program called "Handbrake". It is a free program google it. It runs on Windows and Mac.

    I use it on both.

There are probably other programs that the more experienced guys/gals use, but I like this one because it us simple and straight forward.

    Hope this helps.

I did not understand about the DVD not being recognized are you talking about your computer or Handbrake?

but, Here is what I do...

    This is on Windows version.

Once DVD is recognized by the drive I open up Handbrake.

In the source frame click on Browse.

    select the Video_TS folder.

In the Title drop down box select the movie. (it is usually one with the longest time)

In the Destination Frame click browse or type in your destination where you want the movie saved. (you can name it here also)

In Output Settings frame you can select which codec to encode with. (H.264 gives best quality for me.) The select audio encoder (AAC).
Or you can select the iPhone/ Touch Presets to the right.
(it automatically sets width to 480 just set height to 320)

On the Video tab, You can play with the bit rate or size in MB for better quality / smaller file size.

hit the start button at the top.

let it run and you movie has been converted.

import to itunes and sync with the iphone.

If you have a copyright protected DVD then you have to break it. And posting that is against the rules. but you can google it.

If your DVD is not recognized buy you computer, the only thing I can suggest is try another computer.
