Bad Situation! Need Repair and Don't Have an AT&T Account!

I bought my iPhone about two weeks ago to unlock and use with T-Mobile. Recently, the bottom half-inch of my touch screen has not been responding at all. I can no longer send text messages (the space bar doesn't work, I cannot select the text box in conversation mode). I really need a repair, but am not sure what the best way to do this would be. I have firmware 1.02 installed.

Should i activate the phone (jailbreak first?) and then bring it to the store with no SIM? Do ATT activated iPhones say No Sim Inserted?

Should i keep the phone unactivated? In this case there is no way to show the problem.

Is there any way I can arrange a repair online without giving them my phone number?
