    You cant....without a USB connection.

However, when you get that working then download Iringer (google it, free) it will allow you to make a ringtone out of any mp3 then it will automatically put it in the "ringtones" section of Itunes so you just have to sync the phone!

    Default Simplest guide to ringtones

    1. Drag & Drop any mp3 to iTunes Music
    2. Right click -> Convert to AAC in iTunes
    3. Find your file in MyDocuments->MyMusic->iTunes
    4. Use WinSCP to copy your file to the iPhone over the air ( connect your iPhone to your wireless lan, go to settings -> WiFi, the little arrow next to your wireless network, write down the IP, next in WinSCP enter the IP as Host, root as username and alpine as password. Use the left pane to navigate to your file, right click -> Rename and change only the extension from m4a to m4r. In the right pane (iPhone) go to your ringtone folder, on my phone it is /private/var/Library/Ringtones (iPlus 2.0b moved them and copy your file.
    6. Use settings to find your new ringtone wich will be among the standard ones, not custom ones, and will not be deleted when sync with iTunes.

PS: for editing mp3 files I prefer GoldWave.

    Good Luck.
