    Default Retain SMSs and contacts

    I am on 1.1.4 and going on 2.1.....jailbreaking and unlocking.
    How can I retain all my smss and contacts so that after the upgrade I have all my smss still there with me?
    Tried a search but did not get any results...
    Hope someone can help me.

    just have itunes make a backup of the phone and load the backup after the update

    i am on itunes 8.0.1..
    can u please tell me the exact process to back up? i really cant see any backup options in itunes.
    and how can i be sure that my contacts and smss have been backed up?
    like i synced my contacts with outlook, but i dont know where the file is stored..
    also, if u will please tell me what do i exactly do to get my contacts and smss back on the phone after the update..

    can i just copy the sms.db file from the phone and then after upgrading replace this with the one on the phone at that time?
    will there be a problem because of the different versions..since im now on 1.1.4 and then ill be on 2.1?
