yes, this works for me.
- i have 1.1.1
- edit tunes in iTunes and convert to aiff
- use iPhoneBrowser to upload
- replace with one of the horrible sounding Tones alredy available
- i chose the last one because i believe if its liestened long enough, it will induce a ceasure.

they are in
system/library/audio/UIsounds
the ones you want to change are
sms-received1.caf (DONT TYPE THIS PART, 1 is called "Tri-tone" in settings)
sms-received2.caf (this one is called "Chime")
sms-received3.caf ("Glass")
sms-received4.caf (see where this is going, "Horn")
sms-received5.caf ("Bell")
sms-received6.caf ("Electronic")
you have to save your new file as the same name as the file you are replacing and winscp or whatever you are using will ask if you want to overwrite file.
click overwrite.
then go to settings and check out your text sounds.
if they dont play, you messed up in the format most likely.
if they are still the same sounds, you really messed up!
check where you saved them and make sure the filename is exactly as above.
and Sticky111,
the last tone, electronic, killed my dog!

I don't think there is a particular size limit or time limit to the sms alert tones that is being added. I have uploaded 4 tones successfully - one is 3.25MB (19 sec) , 2.08 (25 sec), 622 kb (7 sec) and the last one 28.9kb ( 2 sec)
The tones were in mp3, converted to aif using itunes. deleted to recycle bin and copied to a different folder (not sure if that is necessary) then renamed them to caf.
I used FileZilla( since it was easier to back-up my original sound files) to ftp and ssh. Also i first deleted the specific sms-received*.caf(* being 1,2...6) on the iphone. I deleted 2,4,5,6. Then i pasted the new caf files.
The files that i used are uploaded to rapidshare.

By the way, I use an 8 GB iphone with 1.1.3 firmware.Last edited by Vaibs; 08-23-2008 at 05:14 PM.

I beg to differ, there are some perameters to replacing tones and i wish i knew what they were. Some work, some dont.
i am using 2.1 3G with iphonebrowser and simply rightclicking the tone to replace and selecting: 'replace with', browsing to my preferred .caf tone and selecting. I have gotten most to work such as screen lock/unlock, and one text tone replaced as well as my email. But when i try and replace my email with a new tone it doesnt work nor do anymore text tones.
Just thinking its the length of the tone or size of it or something, i know what you said about all of yours being different sizes.
Anyone use iphonebrowser having this issue? anyone able to shed some light on it?
thanks!
