sms tone help please

i cant seem to change either of the alerts ( the alert while your in the text screen and the alert for when your not) can anybody help i am running firmware 1.11 ipod 8 gig

Change to what? Custom or something thats on your phone? If its a custom then you need to mod your phone to be able to SSH to it. Check out the Guides section.
