If the phone was in recovery mode, you would see an Itunes icon with a plug underneath it. Sounds like you're in an unactivated state. Did you run jailbreak.jar yet? Before you updated to 1.1.2 did you install OktoPrep?

I have the iTunes logo with the plug beneath it. I got itunes to pull up the phone and tried to restore to 1.0.2, 1.1.1, and 1.1.2 and each time it says that the iphone cannot be restored. What can I do????? I just want it back to factory settings at this point.

With the iPhone plugged in, hold the Home and Power buttons for precisely 10 seconds, then release the Power button to keep holding down the Home button until iTunes says it needs to restore. It should work after that.
