some simple clues may help.
is it wet
have you dropped it anywhere near a full bath/toilet/sink
was the last noise it made a "phizzt"
does it gurgle when you turn it around

I think there is a little button like thing in the bottom of the headphnejack which turns a brown colour when exposed to water.

You can always cover the water sensor with some blotting paper, just poke it down the hole, delicately of course! BUT there is also a small pad of the same paper stuck to the comm board inside the iphone which also changes colour when water damaged... so they got you.
