Just got an unlocked Iphone off Ebay, and I want to install apps. BUT IM SCARED SIRS!

I have an unlocked Iphone currently on unicell, its awesome but it doesnt have the apptappinstaller I see on all the tutorials and whatnot.

So I downloaded it from http://iphone.nullriver.com/beta/ and started going through the tutorial I found. But it started downloading some file with the word "restore" in it.

Its my understanding, which is limited because the amount of information is a bit overwhelming to me at the moment, that I dont want to muck around with restoring or upgrading the firmware on my phone at all. Its at 1.0.2, unlocked and working fine, and I am paranoid that everything I do is going to brick it.

I really wanna install all the cool 3rd party apps, mod and skin it, and maybe get custom ringtones on it, is all of this possible without touching the firmware?
