If your 3GS is old Bootrom you can untether any firmware. If new, only 5.0.1 is untethered.

AFAIK you can only install Siri on iOS 5.

    No, I don't anymore.

But you can use Spire from cydia. It has some issues but it works. You need iOS 5

Yes,as the people above me said,if it is old bootrom it is possible,if it is not old bootrom and you are on 5.0.1 you can use a tethered JB and use untether to make it 'untethered'

If you/your friend has an alternate Iphone 4s it is possible on 5.0 (also possible without 4s) 5.0.1 and 5.1,not on 5.1.1 though(I am not sure)

Spire itself doesn't have memory. I have tested wordjelly free siri server (May/19/2012). It worked great, however, it also cause massive memory leaks to a point that my iPhone 4 was unresponsive. I had to reboot it every couple hours.
