Configuring web apps into straight springboard apps? Possible?
and no Im not talking about Iphone Apper or cloning the safari browser. Im talking about like what ApolloIM is doing. I'd really love if someone could do that for the movies.app and the golf score card. It would be awesome.
and when I refer to ApolloIM I mean this...
they "took" FlickIM and turned it into a native app. You know? So why couldnt someone take the concept of movies.app and program a native app for it?Last edited by aaa; 09-04-2007 at 08:59 PM.

download the myspace.app thing form here..and edit the icon..and in the *.plist.. edit the link that says *myspace.com* to any link you want..and then upload it..and it should be good to go..for any site that you set it for.

No he's asking about a way to convert web apps to native apps.
Not gonna happen, is the basic answer.
Long answer is, you'd have to completely rewrite the app, from an AJAX base to Objective-C. There is no "conversion" software for this, you just have to know both languages, and also you'd have issues because the web apps rely on a lot of Safari's functionality, while the iPhone based native apps would not.

yes, but doesn't ApolloIM rely on internet connection to work and Weather and Stocks, etc.
Why couldn't someone make a new app witht the same features and goals of Movies.app in mind that just updates whenever you went into it while you had an internet connection.
You would probably have to drop some of the flashier stuff (directions to movie theater, imdb, trailer viewing) if I am not mistaken, but something like this could be done couldn't it?

Yes it could. My point was that it isn't just a port of an AJAX app to an Objective-C app. It would be a complete re-write.

Any of these apps could become native, it's just a matter of somebody making it.
So to answer this question
they can, they just haven't.Why couldn't someone make a new app witht the same features and goals of Movies.app in mind that just updates whenever you went into it while you had an internet connection.

How about a way to save full websites into folders onto the iphone, whether done through the iphone or copied over through ssh (or other methods)... and then have Safari run it straight off the HD instead of through an internet connection. This seems a bit easier and more feasible than rewriting the whole app.

You can use Installer.app to install Apache onto your phone, and then save those sites and put them in the htdocs dir..
I forget where the files go, but if you go to your iPhone in your web browser the apache installation page will tell you where to put the files.
I just symlink it to an htdocs dir in $HOME for easy access.
Just be aware anyone can stumble on to your apache server on your wi-fi network since there's no firewall for the iphone yet.
