    Default 5s, can't be unlocked?
I bought a 5s a week ago hoping to being it with me for my 8month stay abroad. I've had iPhones before and just unlocked them no problem. I've never had to do it all with a toddler before however and whatever I try to google and read it seems like I'm screwed? It can't be done? I don't want / need it jailbreaked just need to make it work with a different carrier..

You can have it factory unlocked to work on any carrier. Try here.

How do I know which option is the right one for me? I use a Japanese carrier. Is the site legit? I thought I could do something at home like with my previous iPhone..

The site is legit, the owner is a Super Moderator here on our site and a friend. Once it is factory unlocked, it will work with any active GSM simcard.

Thank you, sounds great then! I sent him an email on the site to see which would work for my phone since I don't have AT&T etc..

He wasn't able to do it so I'm still looking for suggestions and ideas. With my luck though I bet it can't be unlocked.

I would say your next best option would be a r-sim or gevey sim

I went to a store today that unlocks iPhones and learned that Japanese carrier iPhones cannot be unlocked at this time. Apparently it's been like that for the last 6-7 months so I have to give up for now and use my 3GS while abroad. Thank you everyone!
