If it is unlocked as you claimed , any sim you put in and plug into iTunes should let you activate. I believe your iphone 5 is locked to a carrier.

Yeah, I definitely think you're right.
It's a T-mobile cell phone so I think it's locked to T-mobile. If I get a T-mobile sim card and put it into the phone after trimming it to the proper size, would I be able to activate it?

i suggest just borrowing another person nano sim from t-mobile to just activate or you can have it unlocked.

So I was able to activate it with a tmobile chip but it's not unlocked. I also can't find any websites that'll unlock an i[hone 5 with 6.1.4 firmware. Any ideas?

You need to IMEI unlock it by Tmobile.

Will T-mobile do that for me even if I don't have a plan with them? And even if I didn't buy my phone from them?

Just don't use iDeviceGuys.com (the owner here is a moderator with username 'Cowboy')....I paid for an iphone 5 T-Mobile back on July 31st and I still haven't received my unlock. He said he was going to give me a partial refund in an email, but after a month nothing. I even filed a dispute with Paypal to try and get my money back. He even fought that stating 'No Guarantee'. He definitely doesn't know how to run a business much less customer service. I plan on posting our email string on here, but I'll probably get banned since he is a moderator....
