My Dad Updated his unlocked 3GS to latest firmware...Is he stuck now?

got a question, my dad just updated to latest firmware on the 3gs..now he cant even get into the phones options because its asking for a sim card...is the phone done now?? thank you

o sorry i forgot to mention, hes outside of the country using a different sim card...he needs to phone to be unlocked

He can buy a prepaid sim card just about anywhere.

yeah but he already has a contract with a service provider problem is he needs an unlocked iphone for it to work

It's depend on which model of the 3gs that he has. If it's the latest with Toshiba chipset, he can't downgrade the baseband with Redsn0w. Otherwise, it's possible.

You can use iH8sn0w's tool (iDetector) to verify if baseband is flashable or not at his blog:

Of course it won't accept any other SIM if it's locked to somewhat carrier. There must be the original SIM to activacate, unless you've got to facotry unlock it which will make it accept any SIM.
