Factory unlock iphone 4 on craigslist question

So... i currently have an Iphone 4 with the gevey sim for T-Mobile. I'm trying to update it to the latest IOS (its 4.2.1 now). If i get it factory unlocked from craigslist or whatever.. will that work? is this true or a scam?

if your only after unlock, you can update to ios6 if you want and with the IMEI unlock. ebay sells the imei ~ $2
