I used a ebay IMEI unlock service to unlock my iPhone 4. After receiving conformation that it was unlocked I restored it as a new iPhone.I activated it with the new sim and it showed the "Congratulations, your iPhone is unlocked" message but I always keep getting NO SERVICE.It detects my carrier fine, but I don't get service. The sim works on other phones (not iPhones but other normal phones).I used to use gevey to unlock before the IMEI unlock so I think its not a hardware fault.
Can someone please help me and tell me where I went wrong?

Have you edited your APN settings for the carrier you're using? Not doing so can result in stuff like this.
If you can't find the APN settings on Google, tell me and I'll help you with it.Great minds discuss ideas.
Average minds discuss events.
Small minds discuss people.

I changed my APN settings using unlockit.co.nz but I'm still getting no service.

Is your phone providing a signal with the original SIM card? Try using the original SIM, then once this is working swap it for the new SIM you'd prefer to use. I found after my IMEI unlock I had to swap the SIM cards a couple of times and it did eventually work fine. I've rebooted, and powered off as well with no further issues.

not the same service on ebay, but different one. The phone was AT&T and was IMEI Unocked.

Try installing the T-Mobile SIM, wait until you see "No Service". Connect the iPhone to your computer. Open iTunes. Allow iTunes to sync and backup with the iPhone. Once fully completed restore with Stock Official Apple iOS 5.1.1 (i.e. non-jailbroken), and you should receive "Congratulations, your iPhone has been unlocked" within iTunes. It resets your activation status, downloads new system certificates on the phone and checks which MNC's you can register with. You will then get service on the T-Mobile SIM.
I had the same issue as you, a system recovery kicked my iPhone 4 with iOS 5.1.1 and Modem F/W: 04.12.01 back into life.
EDIT: I did try to PM you these details but failed to send the message not sure why!

Cool you should be good to go now then. How did you get on?

changing your APN only deals with internet data and MMS, if you have no service signal, there's no point in messing with the APN as changing to T-Mobile's correct one will have no affect on fixing the signal
have you already tried restoring again with the t-mobile sim inserted?
